Sweeney sequel in the works

With the new big screen contemporary version of TV police classic The Sweeney due in cinemas later this year, its director Nick Love is already planning a follow-up.

Screen Daily, which broke the story, says that Love is in negotiations with his stars Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (aka singer Plan B) to reprise their roles as detectives Jack Regan and George Carter of the Metropolitan Police branch the ‘Flying Squad’. Given the age of Winstone it remains to be seen how he could partake in a prequel as a younger Regan.

The trade daily says the second film would be “more international in flavour” and could be a prequel showing how the duo first met.

Ray Winstone confirmed film bosses were so impressed by the pair’s on-screen chemistry. He told The Sun, “They want another one and we haven’t even finished this one yet. It’s just being edited so we’re trying to figure out a storyline. We wrapped before Christmas and it was a great experience. I love working with Plan B.”

The Sweeney is released in cinemas on Friday September 21.
