... angrily shouts unsavoury opinions about something or other at someone, without realising he has been overheard by a group of fans behind him (all holding rather unbelievable placards saying "(x) is great!" etc). On hearing what an unlikeable guy he really is, they throw down their signs and walk away, dejected, as he realises his career is ruined.

I know it's not much to go on, but I think any further detail might be the result of additions of the intervening years ...

(The reason I ask is that I often think of this scene these days, because nobody would write a scene like that now: celebrities can pretty much say anything, and not get any really unpleasant professional comeback).

Not your movie, but along similiar lines is the ending of A Face in the Crowd where Andy Griffith doesn't know he's still on the air when he reveals what a creep he really is.

Sounds like the end of the film 'The Man Who Had Power over Women' (1970)

Apart from Paul Jones in the film Privilege, the only thing that's come to mind is "ITV Playhouse" - It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (1977), with Richard O'Brien as pop star Dave Head. Best I can do at the moment.
