    ceefax:

Britain's David Haye beat giant Russian Nikolay Valuev on points to be crowned WBA heavyweight champion in Nuremberg.

The Londoner, who gave away seven stone to his opponent, started steadily but struggled to land any telling hits.

Haye kept working hard and almost knocked over the Russian with a powerful punch in the final round.

Haye, 29, won a majority victory by 114-114, 116-112, 116-112, to become Britain's first heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 2003.

Valuev may be big, but he doesn't look like a very good boxer. He's already lost the title a couple of times. It looks like he only wins it when the competition isn't very good.

He's already moved into movies and has had 3 roles in films since 2006

Good for David Haye, but I wouldn't make a habit of giving away that much weight in a fight. Freddie Mills used to fight much bigger opponents regularly and he complained a lot about "headaches" once he retired and before is death.

Just to add my congratulations, a difficult opponent to fight I though David boxed a very very clever fight.

....and a South London lad too
