I never read "Auto Focus" but saw a bio on Crane on A&E years ago. The poor guy definitely had some problems. He was from Waterbury, CT and a fellow Nutmegger.
I saw the Auto Focus movie at the 99 Cents Store and didn't get it and I practically buy any movie at that price. I understand it's a good movie, but I find the subject matter about a performer I liked too unpleasant.

I know what you mean. He was a talented, good looking actor, but that sort of thing is disturbing to think about.
This show was repeated on Britain's Granada Plus channel a few years ago but I never saw it, alas. Altogether, an incredible 168 episodes were made, spanning six years (1965 - 1971). I remember reading about the horrifying circumstances of Bob's death. A terrible tragedy.
Bob Crane as Colonel Robert E. Hogan:
Date photographed: 23rd February 23rd 1967, apparently. Any proof of this?
Robert Clary* as Corporal Louis LeBeau (undated this time):
*Robert Clary is credited as Robert Clark in Corbis's caption
I find it hard to believe, but I read elsewhere Warner Klemperer and John Banner were originally cast in each others parts and the change was made a day before shooting. I can't picture Klemperer playing Sgt. Schultz.

Interesting, 'cause I just watched an episode last night where they do exactly that, as part of the "plot".

On the satellite station in Oz they were giving some "trivia" about Hogan's Heroes & one of the items was that Robert Clary always wore gloves on the show because he refused to take off his wedding ring.![]()
LOved the "Simpsons" episode with Colonel Klink as Homer's guardian angel.
"Hoooomer!"

There's an episode of Batman where Klink pops out of a window and chats to the Dynamic Duo about Hogan and his escape attempts as if the war was still on!![]()
Werner Klemperer is one of the defendents in Judgment at Nuremberg. It makes it quite hard to watch his scenes as you keep expecting him to go "Oooooooh Hogan!"![]()

That's where I've seen him before - yes! I like Hogan's Heroes although I think only the first two series have made it to DVD here? Klemperer was fabulous as Colonel Klink - wasn't he a violinist and conductor as well in real life? I know he was the son of Otto Klemperer, a conductor of the old school.
Klemperer played Adolph Eichmann in the movie, Operation Eichmann. Banner aso played Nazi officers before becoming Sgt. Schultz.
