A French film where the protagonist murders a prostitute who has mocked him and ends up on the guillotine. I have no idea what era it comes from.

This may be a possibility - although it appears the wrong man is executed!:

LA CHIENNE (Jean Renoir, 1931) Dennis Grunes

Scarlet Street (1945) was based on the same novel.

Thank you Euryale. I cannot rate it as I am asking on behalf of a friend. Will let you know if it rings a bell.

Another possibility is Claude Lelouch's La vie, l'amour, la mort, where a man kills a prostitute who taunts him and is sentenced to execution. The film was a plea for the abolition of the death penalty.
