Can anyone inform me which film starring Hayley Mills had scenes shot in Preston Park, Brighton close to the tennis courts.

I am reliably informed this was around 1966.

    Any help much appreciated.

    The Chalk Garden.

She is seen with the governess played by Deborah Kerr in Preston Park.

They gets on a bus heading South on London Road by the park .. but when on board the bus appears to be in Eastbourne!

Edith Bagnold who wrote The Chalk Garden lived at Rottingdean.

Other scenes take place at Cuckmere Haven, Alfriston, the coast road near Belle Tout and Folkington.

    Hello everybody,

Does anybody know where the location of this beautiful house is where Laurel (Hayley Mills) with her grand mother lived in the film "The Chalk Garden"? Someone on this forum mentioned some locations where this movie was shot, but not where this house is standing.

I tried to find it and searched the internet - without success.

Not sure about interiors but some garden scenes were filmed at Clapham House in Litlington where Maria Fitzherbert used to live and which is pretty near the other locations.

    cheers

Thank you so much, Johnnyn, for your reply! I only saw it now. It seems you are the only one who knows something about this house. Normally it is not so difficult to find filming locations, but this one is not mentioned anywhere - not even on imdb where I asked the same question. That's why I am really curious how you know about it.

    Cheers,

    Nadja

    Nadja.

Re House location - Apologies for delay in replying.

I actually noticed it mentioned in an old Sussex Newspaper from the early sixties.

They did lots of location filming in Sussex. The house is pretty close to Alfriston and only a few miles from Beachy Head.

Sussex was popular with film-makers being so close to London and of course this story was set in Sussex by Edith Bagnold who lived at Rottingdean.

At one point in the script's history - they were planning to shift filming to America.

Deborah Kerr often seemed to be playing governesses and filming in Sussex in the early sixties.

    cheers

    Johnnyn
