Thought this deserved a new thread.

Lindsay Anderson's The White Bus is on the new MGMHD channel Sky 345 at 4.40am Thursday 17 December....I'm close to tears!(not really).

A strange but extremely compelling film. Typical Lindsay Anderson, a quirky mixture of realism and social satire that only he could do.

Does anyone know why there were some colour scenes in the film? Was it the same reason as If, he couldn't afford the colour stock for the whole film, or was there an artistic motive?

The theory that black and white film was used in If.... for budgetary reasons has been pretty much discredited. As you say, it wasn't the first time Anderson had mixed colour and black and white stock, Malcolm McDowell said black and white was used in If.... as an artistic choice (and it does work doesn't it?), but further than that Anderson chose fast black and white stock for certain scenes because light levels were such that colour would have produced unsatisfactory results. I think Anderson was simply being the playful old devil he undoubtedly could be when he said b&w was a cash saving option.

It's said in the extras on the 'If' DVD that black & white film was used due to it looking better than colour on shots like when the light is flooding through the windows of the Church/Chapel or whatever it is.

An interesting short this. IIRC it was originally made as part of a trilogy of films by the 'Free Cinema' director Lyndsey Anderson. The other two were to be made by Tony Richardson and Karel Reisz but, as far as I am aware, for some reason they were never made.

Tony Richardson made his film, known as Red and Blue. A clip of Douglas Fairbanks Jnr and Vanessa Redgrave singing in a swimming pool was shown in the Hollywood UK series. Would love to see it. The White Bus print is exellent on MGMHD.

I remember seeing this years ago on TV. Isn't it a white bus trollying around decaying Northern England, bomb sites etc?
