TV Star Warned Over Waving Knife At Intruders

Celebrity mum Myleene Klass is "aghast" after being warned by police for waving a knife at teenagers who entered her garden.

The TV star and Marks & Spencer model was in her kitchen, with her daughter upstairs, when she spotted people peering into her window just after midnight on Friday.

She grabbed a knife and banged the windows before they ran away.

Hertfordshire Police officers warned Klass she should not have used a knife to scare off the teens because carrying an "offensive weapon" - even in her own home - was illegal.

Klass told Sky News in a statement: "My family are totally fine and I thank the police for being so re-assuring and comforting.

"However, I was left shocked and surprised to be told that a private individual in the privacy of their own home runs the risk of committing a criminal offence if, out of fear for their own safety and their loved ones, they grab something with which they could defend themselves if an intruder enters their home.

"I totally respect British law - but surely everyone has the right to self-defence in their own home if they are in danger?"

Her spokesman Jonathan Shalit said the former Hearsay singer was "utterly terrified" and was stepping up security at the property near Potters Bar.

He told the Sunday Telegraph: "Myleene was aghast when she was told that the law did not allow her to defend herself at home.

"All she did was scream loudly and wave the knife to try and frighten them off."

Klass' fiance Graham Quinn was away on business at the time of the scare.

It came amid calls for greater rights for people to defend themselves against intruders on their property.

In December, Munir Hussain was jailed for attacking a man who tied up his family in their home. He and his brother used a cricket bat to beat one of the intruders.

I expect that the kids were surprised to actually find her at home!

I wonder if her daughter's worked out who she is yet?

I read somewhere that she is a classically trained pianist.

Anyway, back to the knife. If not a knife, can you get done for waving a copy of the Argos book at an intruder.

I wonder what the police really said, as opposed to what the Torygraph said they said to fit in with their campaign about people defending themselves.

I wonder if the person quoted as her spokesman is really her spokesman or just somebody who met her once. I wonder if they really said what they are quoted as saying.

I wonder what Mylene really did. Did she tap on the window with the handle of her knife or did she wave the knife, blade outwards, in a threatening manner?

A report like this is just about meaningless as regards discovering the facts of the case

Regardless of exactly how she was holding the knife, if she really was ticked off for it, it's a bit out of order and just plain wrong - but as you say, there's not a whole lot of fact included in the article.

I'm sure someone will remember - but was the incident cited at the end ...

"In December, Munir Hussain was jailed for attacking a man who tied up his family in their home. He and his brother used a cricket bat to beat one of the intruders."

... actually inside Mr. Hussain's house? Is that the incident where they nearly beat the man to death in the street as he was running away?

(I'm not saying he did or didn't deserve it, I just think it's very relevant to the matter in hand, if the paper is going to use it as an example.)

I recall the incident of a British tourist on his way out from Miami (?) airport in a hired car which broke down. he knocked on a door to use the phone. The householder shot him dead.

I'm surprised they gave the press the story, better to have said nothing. It's now going to be the subject for future interviews for the months to come and I'm sure if a similar incident happens to anyone one she'll be asked to give her opinion.

Whether intruders are in the house or outside having a knife in the hand to remonstrate/confront them is silly.

Which "they" do you mean? The police or Myleen's "spokesman"?

Myleene's "spokesman", Jonathan Shalit, is her manager. I know him well .His zest for entrepeneurialism (whoaa...that's nearly half a Haiku !!) would lead me to conclude that he's spinning juicy columns of publicity.

I think we need to focus on the more serious accusation of her heinous

    Crimes Against Music.

I'm taking cover under a soundproofed Steinway, armed with a blunt Metronome and a

picture of Bobby Crush to ward off her Evil spirit.

    SHE MUST BE STOPPED...

MK's piano playing sounded okay to me, but I don't have the proper ear for it. I recall that Somerset Maugham movie where this guy had trained for years to be a classical pianist and performed in front pf friends and a professional pianist. It sounded good to me. She told him he would never be more than a talented amateur. She then played and you could hear the difference. He went upstairs and shot himself (I'm not suggesting that).
