I've been looking forward to it because of the Matthew Morrison factor (seen him on stage a couple of times) and it's as terrific as I'd been told. Great stuff.
On E4 now, I have laughed out loud twice in first 10 minutes. Looks very promising.
Doh it's actually called Glee but it is funny.

All it seems to do is to reinforce the stereotypes that every American wants to be a performer and that American High School is hell on earth
Did it get much better after the first 10 or 15 minutes? That's when I gave up on it

Yep, you completely missed the point of the show which is that most of the choir members don't actually want to be performers![]()

(I only watched 10-15 minutes of the pilot episode)

If you'd stuck with it you'd see that by the end of episode 2, the choirmaster has only managed to get about 5 members, one of whom he's had to blackmail. The point of the show (see also High School Musical), is about how kids have to be learn that performing on stage is cooler than being a geek or a jock (see, I know all the terminology)

It's supposed to be a satire but lacks the bite and dark humour of films like 'Heathers'.

Do they explain what a Glee Club is? It would have helped if they'd explained that in the first 5 minutes

It's a choir - wasn't that fairly obvious? And since it's written for an American audience they don't need to - it would be like having footnotes in Doctor Who to tell the overseas audience what Eastenders is. I don't think a show based on musical comedy is ever going to be as dark as Heathers but later episodes do get bleaker. But if you don't like musicals, it's never really going to be the show for you.
I keep hearing good things about this. I may have to investigate...

You won't regret it and I don't think it matters if you miss the first couple of episodes. Obviously a slight suspension of disbelief is need as the average age of the glee club is about 26 but at least (unlike the History Boys) they're all younger than the teacher![]()
It's a bit like Peter Kay's pop factor spoof in that the stereotypes are unoriginal and there's a lack of subtlety. With Glee I get the impression it partly wants to send up High School Musical, but also is rather fond of it. Both are guilty of padding the show out with numbers they cynically hope to shift on iTunes.

Isn't that the point of a musical - that it has, you know, songs?![]()
I don't mind the show, but I wish they'd keep the singing to what the choir's actually doing and not breaking into song a la Bollywood every few minutes. I like the way the lady PE teacher keeps getting her comeuppance, though.
I think the idea is not that Glee (or choir) is promoted as cooler than 'football' or cheerleading, but that it's thought to be one of the very lowest forms of extra curricular activity on the high school social scale. It ranks along with majorettes. It's the club that 'less beautiful' people join when no other clubs will have them, therefore no-one in the cool set will be seen dead around it.
I never knew exactly what a glee club was until you explained that, so thankyou very much. Now, can anyone tell me what the "Glee Club Of The Damned", as referred to in the YouTube 'literal' video for Bonnie Tyler's TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART, is? The next line in the song is "Reference joke", but a reference to what exactly? The band? The Losey film?
I saw the first 2 epsisodes on C4 on Sunday, and thought it quite good fun: comedy that was actually funny, and good musical numbers.

Yes it does seem very funny!! There song cant stop believing is very catchy, even those it was sang by Journey South orginally.
This is about the third time in different threads that someone has mention John Barrowman as if he were a joke (I apologize if I read your comments wrong)!
I'm beginning to wonder does he have a bad reputation in the UK?
