i've had this many times on my dvd recorder (which also doesn't seem to have an option to finalize discs unless they're re-writable discs which seem to finalize automatically?) my SKY+ sometimes fails to record too!
Anyone else had this problem ? I set the dvd to record Tread Softly Stranger last week while I was at work, and it seems the machine switched on ok - my wife saw all the lights on and the display counting down - but when I came home and took a look, the disc is showing as 'Blank' even though a visual examination shows that it has actually recorded.
Not the first time this has happened unfortunately - once or twice I've had a message 'Failed to stop recording' when I end a recoding and the disc then shows as blank.
This was a disc from the middle of a batch of Kodak dvds and the rest have been ok. Is it a faulty disc or is my player/recorder the problem ?
Frustrating................![]()

My dvd-recorder wasn't very reliable and now it's just a dvd-player. I think it's a fairly common problem.
Another problem can be if the Sky+/HD box is in "green mode" and switches itself off in the wee small hours when it's very unlikely you would be staying up to record something manually. The recorder therefore records zilch. This mode can be switched off, but I don't think it was flagged up very well beforehand.
another annoying thing about SKY+ is when you've set 'series link' recording,if an episode is moved from it's normal slot it isn't recorded!![]()

Really? My Freeview recorder is really good about chasing programmes round the schedules. And even better, Rupert doesn't get a penny from it![]()

believe me if i wasn't a football fan i would not be a customer of rupert either!![]()
I had a similar 'finalise' problem on an old dvd player. The set up routine was overly complex and the darn thing was a tad temperamental towards dvdr's.
Same thing happened to me! I doubt your disc is faulty. I left a blank DVD recording 4 hours of jazz on BBC last week. The disc was unreadable - it had content but didn't seem to like recording to the limit of it's capacity.

I had the opposite yesterday on my Sky+ when trying to record a one hour programme in the afternoon. When we got home at 10pm it was still recording!

Modern technology eh ? The missus says I should go back to VHS.............![]()
I am rapidly thinking the same. Start up time on tape was immediate. So was ending a recording!

That sounds like good advice. I recently bought a Toshiba combined DVD/VCR/HDD. One day I might grasp how to actually record a programme onto DVD. (I've read the first 50 pages of the instruction book, just another 33 to go!). Right now, VHS has a warm familiarity to it and even on a 37" TV, I find the picture quality perfectly acceptable.![]()

I've been thinking of purchasing a DVD recorder for a long time because i thought maybe i shold move with technology and be 'modern' but it all seems a bit of a palava to me, and after reading these posts i think i'll stick with good ole tape for the forseeable future, i just hope manufacturers continue to make combis.

Thats a disgrace - I don't have Sky but assumed Sky+ was the bees knees when it came to recording. On my last VHS machine - 13 yrs ago - there was a system to avoid that happening called Programme Delivery Control. Have got a Panasonic DVD/Hardrive recorder and it doesn't have that facility on it. I just set the programme extend the timeslot in case the programme is slightly delayed - why oh why couldn't Panasonic have put PDC on the machine ?![]()

I may be wrong, but PDC is only transmitted via the analogue signal and is only available on BBC1 & BBC2? Plus we were reliant on the broadcasters to send the PDC signal to activate our VCR's and sometimes that didn't happen and so no recording was made.
I used to find that it worked okay when feature films were being shown, but try using it on something more obscure and it often didn't work at all.
So like Nicam Stereo, it's something that will bite the dust once the analogue signals are switched off?

I find the quality from tape is perfectly adequate for my purposes however if you are a collector then DVDs are a must unless you have a house with a thousand mansions!
