Could be Road Games with Jamie Lee Curtis and Stacey Keach. Despite the presence of those two it is an Australian film.

Unfortunately not Road Games. The actress who plays the young women is similar to the actress who plays Muriel's paralyzed friend in the film Muriel's wedding - although I'm sure it's not her.

A long shot but it sounds like the premise for "Dust Devil", but that is set in Namibia.

Check out the storyline in the Amazon review. The actress who takes the lead female role is Chelsea Field. If you haven't seen it, it's well worth a look. Here's a screenie from the aforementioned Dust Devil with Chelsea Field, look familiar at all, the desert setting could easily be mistaken for Australia in places.

Could it be Fatal Bond (1991)?:

Fatal Bond (1991) curator's notes on ASO - Australia's audio and visual heritage online

Dunno if Linda Blair could pass for Rachel Griffiths, though!

    Euryale.

    "American Perfekt"?

With Amanda Plummer and Fairuza Balk. Not Australian though, so maybe not.

Also a similar plot to the 70s Brit horror DEADLY STRANGERS starring Hayley Mills and Simon Ward (in a part originally intended for Hywel Bennett to complete the trilogy with TWISTED NERVE and ENDLESS NIGHT)
