How broad was Russ Abbott in his Comedy Madhouse days?
But then how brilliant was he in SEPTEMBER SONG with Michael Williams...?

There are many comedians who turn thier hand to serious roles and do really well. For me the best has been Robbie Coltrane in Cracker!
Bradley Walsh does well in Law and order UK to IMO. Also Victoriian Wood impressed me in Housewife 49.
Anyone else got a favorite funny person in a different role?

there seems to be an awful lot of comedians in period drama nowadays-mostly not very good!
pauline quirke in 'the sculptress' was quite good and kathy burke in 'nil by mouth' was excellent.
Patricia Hayes in Edna the Inebriate Woman.
Bill Maynard Kisses at Fifty.
Plus the ones equally adept in drama or comedy eg Margaret Rutherford,Thora Hird,Maureen Lipman,Maggie Smith
There may be some good examples in this thread .... although the roles mentioned in the thread may not necessarily be serious ....

Someone has mentioned Billy Connolly in `Mrs Brown` on the link. I agree he was very good in it but I thought he was pretty dire in `The man who sued God` (at least I think thats what it was called!)

Jim Bowen - he played a town councillor in a TV show and was brilliant.
IMO 'The man who sued God' was also brilliant and very, very funny.
Billy Connolly was also very good in The Elephant's Graveyard, a Play for Today venture and in the feature film The Debt Collector.
Lee Evans also put in a good performance on Freeze Frame, a syory of a paranoid individual who was once wrongly accused of a crime and took to videotaping his every move 24 hours a day.

Are you thinking of Bowen's appearance as a sombre journalist in Jonathan Creek or can we add that as another example?
Bobby Ball was pretty good in The Worlds Fattest Man and Not Going Out.
Les Dawson as the grandmother in Nona (1991)
Norman Wisdom as a cancer patient in GOING GENTLY - probably the only role I've been able to stomach our Norm in.
The brilliant Julie Walters in A Short Stay in Switzerland and Mo, to mention just two.
On the other hand a dramatic actress who can't do comedy is Zoe Wanamaker.

Don't forget Billy's excellent performances in the Peter McDougall productions Just Another Saturday, The Elephant's Graveyard and Down Among the Big Boys, but especially the first one. Then we also had Gregor Fisher putting in a very good early performance in the PMc production Just a Boy's Game. All available in a great value boxset.![]()
Jack Dee, also in Jonathan Creek
Hope I am not duplicating anything
Alfred Marks
George Robey
Jimmy Logan
Freddy Starr.
Dave King.
Jimmy Jewel.

I didn`t see `Mo` but `A short stay in Switzerland` has to be one of the most emotional pieces of drama I`ve ever seen! A wonderful performance by Julie.
