Could it have been Meantime?
OK this will be tough to explain but I will do my best. I saw this film on TV when I was in my late teens I strongly suspect it was made in the 70s. I know I saw it on TV a second time, but cannot recall when that was, but it was a long time ago.
The film had a vague similarity to Naked, staring David Thewliss, as did the lead character.
In the film, there is a youg male, possibly still a teenager, he is full of cynicism, and makes frequent Lennon/Dylan like comments to his parents, aunt etc as he goes through his drab life.
His parents and family seem to be intellectually dull, whereas he is intelligent.
The guy is from London and the film is set in London, perhaps some outer suburb.
I think the guy had dark or black hair, not short and he may have worn glasses.
Although rebellious, I think he may have been at the age when he had not quite been ready or able to leave home, but he clearly hates his drab life, his uninspiring relatives etc.
I cant recall any specific scene but there may possibly be a scene where he loses his temper with this stunted Mother in a kitchen, and they argue or he argues, and walks out.
Unlikes a lot of others here, I will be thanking you all for your time, I notice that a lot of folk come here, ask a question then vanish, not me.
Thanks in advance.
Harry.
was it funny?
only there was a sitcom like that called Alexander the Greatest
the star (now older)was the boy with glasses from Catweazle
That would be Garry Warren, Arfur.
The description sounds almost identical to Billy Liar (1963), played by Tom Courtenay, except it was set in the North and he didn't wear glasses (maybe in one of his fantasy scenes?). He did have a row, but it was with his father (Wilfred Pickles), and by the stairs not in the kitchen. Apart from all those differences I'm confident that's the one!
Sounds like Tim Roth in Meantime
Cornershop thanks
I always get him confused with Spencer Banks.
yes it really was a tough life being a child star.

You know I think it might have been, I just saw a few brief clips on YT and it bears a very strong resemblance.
The actor Phil Daniels fits the bill visually and so does his attitude, I also do seem to recall a weaker quiter brother.
The only things that dont fit are that a) I recall the protagonist being or playing a younger man, possibly someone who hasn't left yet home or who is a bit less independent that Daniels appears in those clips, and b) I thought I saw this before I left home, I left home in like 1980/1981 and then went to London in 1982 to work.
I would have to have seen this film after or in 1984, this is possible but it doesn't quite fit my recollection.
Still it could be the same film, I will watch it then see.
Thanks for this, even if this isn't the movie, it is close in a lot of respects.
Many thanks

Yes I am optimistic that this may be it, amazing I've been wracking my brain for decades over this.
I don't like the narrator for that clip, he makes it sound like a fun fiilled sit com.
Harry.
definitely sounds like Mean time.............

I've copied the Playlist URL, so you should see it continuously.
It couldn't be more different from my suggestion of Billy Liar.
Just goes to show how much this country changed in 20 years
For the worse. Listen to the bad language! Look at the clothes!
Well thanks to all of you, I watched this last night on YT, I think this is the very same movie.
I have been wondering about this for decades!
Thanks
