Commons Speaker John Bercow clashes with Tory MP

A Conservative MP has clashed with Commons Speaker John Bercow after being told off for "untoward" behaviour.

Backbencher Mark Pritchard received a further reprimand from Mr Bercow after claiming a government minister had appeared to "prompt" the rebuke.

The Speaker angrily denied this, insisting that to suggest such a thing was "wrong and unacceptable".

Lord Tebbit stirs trouble for Speaker

Lord Tebbit has told the BBC's Politics Show that Conservatives in Buckingham should be allowed to campaign for the UKIP candidate Nigel Farage if they want.

The Conservative Party is officially backing the Speaker John Bercow for re-election and have instructed all members to do the same.

But Lord Tebbit says any activist should be allowed to campaign for who they want as there is not an official Conservative candidate.

John Bercow was a Conservative MP before becoming Speaker in June 2009.

Me thinks they fancy someone else in the big chair when they get to power.

Are the Tories beginning to eat their own?

Beginning? They've been doing it for at least the last 200 years - and I'm very happy for them to carry on (or should that be Carry On?) doing it for another 200 if they (or the commonweal) last that long....

The feeling was that the Labour Party had got one up on The Tories by getting John Bercow elected as Speaker, who at the time definitely wasn't the choice of the Conservatives. The moment Speaker Bercow's tush hit the upholstery the Tories were saying that as soon as the election was won a new Speaker would be elected, Frank Field being one of the possible candidates so I'm surprised that Bercow is now their official choice, though they do have to win the election first.

Speaker Bercow has done away with the traditional court dress and opted for what appears to be a school teacher's gown so why he doesn't start throwing the blackboard rubber at miscreant MPs I'll never though, but I must admit as a regular viewer to PM's Questions he certainly has speeded the process up by getting members of the house to keep the questions at a sensible length.

(And perhaps he could put all the badly-behaved ones in detention while he's at it - but would there be a room big enough?)

But they have to say they support him because it would look very bad if they didn't and I believe it would be the first time ever that a party did not support a member of their own party on the Woolsack. They did support Field in the election of Speaker, but that doesn't mean they will do so post-election and I doubt very much they will do so again and will go for some Cameronesque flunky who they hope will be sympathetic in 50/50s.

Where Britmovie leads, the Daily Politics follows.

This morning they mentioned John Bercow and what is considered his lack of authority and the personal rebukes he administers in PMQs. Last week he called for Derek Twigg to be quiet and there have been others.

Someone likened him to a School master of English trying to control an unruly class of boys. Where's Jimmy Edwards when you need him.

Having a man of principle and independent thought would suit neither party so Frank was only ever a stalking horse. I cannot see how he would even want the job to be honest.

    - Frank Field MP

In the past the idea of representative government has held together with responsible government, i.e. a government being accountable for its actions, because our electoral system usually delivers a party with a clear majority in the House of Commons that is in charge of its programme. Nobody in yesterday's debate considered how making votes more equal, and with it the possible rise of a multi-party government, might begin to knock away and undermine the idea of responsible government as we now know it.

From that snippet I'm trying to work out whether he is for or against PR?

He's probably hoping somebody might give it some real thought... before making any more ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-anges .... to what remains of whatever political system we still have.

Still don't know what I was waiting for

And my time was running wild

    A million dead-end streets and

Every time I thought I'd got it made

It seemed the taste was not so sweet

So I turned myself to face me

But I've never caught a glimpse

Of how the others must see the faker

I'm much too fast to take that test

With many people's political views seeming to be becoming dictated by the selective rationing of Soundbites from the Media Spindustry Industrial Complex, you need not worry about the second and third verses......... Nobody will ever know they were there, so who cares what the full story is ?
