I am guessing it is "Pathfinders to Mars" (1960) (or its follow up) - all episodes now lost. I think it went out around 5:30 on Sunday on ITV and had a couple of mildly scarey moments.
Does anyone remember a space adventure program late 1950s early 1960s
I remember being very afraid and hiding behind the couch. All i remember is the space ship looked like a bicycle spanner (probably was) two globes held together with a rod - silver coloured there was an air of malice about the thing - like quatermass i still remember the claustrophobic feeling it gave me. I want to put the demon to bed by finding out more. It made such an impression on me used to draw the space ship at school as i would do later with Fireball XL5.

It can't be all lost as I'm sure I've got a (ropey) copy of an episode. I can't remember what the spaceship looked like though, but I shall search out the episode for a gander and report back.
I've now had a chance to have a look again at PATHFINDERS TO MARS (Episode 4 "Lichens!" tx: 01.01.1961) and the spaceship in fact looks remarkably like the original Apollo command module, with a gantry below, so it might not be the ship bobbo is remembering.
I do believe I can remember this! If I do remember correctly the serial was about the group landing on the moon and finding traces of an ancient civilisation below the surface. One of the artefacts they found was a spacecraft, in the shape described. For some reason the group's spacecraft was unserviceable so they had to use the ancient craft. Okay, it was a few million years old, but it worked and got them back to earth!
I suppose I must have been about 10 years old when I saw this. Funny thing, the memory, can't remember what I was doing last week, but this serial is still clear.
