Sounds like Honore de Balzac's "The Elixir Of Life" which was one of the stories told in the sixth episode of The Liars on 11/02/1966. This episode is one of six (out of thirteen) which still survive.
Here's one that I vaguely remember, i'm pretty sure it's from the 60's. A
medieval King (a pious man) is on his deathbed when he shows his son a vial
which holds a magic life bestowing liquid. The son (a wicked man) keeps the
elixir for himself & lets his father die. Years later on his deathbed the wicked
King shows the same elixir to his own son (like his grandfather a pious man).
The son is so overwhelmed that he starts praying & the wicked king dies
before he can drink the elixir. This goes on for years with each father & son
being total opposites in character & the elixir never gets used. I think it
may be from "The Liars" but I'm not sure. Ring any bells ?
