"The Omen"
A Canterbury Tale (1944)
Most of the action takes place in the villages around Canterbury but the leading characters go to the cathedral towards the end of the film.
They weren't allowed to film in the cathedral itself in 1944. In any case, a lot of the stained glass windows had been taken out because of the bombing and the aisles were filled with earth to be used for fire-fighting and to act as a soft landing for any carvings that fell from on high.
So the film-makers re-created the cathedral in the studio! They did it well enough that it has fooled some official cathedral guides who were convinced that the film was filmed in the cathedral - until we point out some small differences
But there are some exteriors of the real cathedral in the film and there's one shot taken inside with a hand held camera that was included in the film. It's the one that pans up towards the ceiling of the cathedral

Christ Church in Oxford turns up in the Harry Potters and The Golden Compass.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame has to be a contender, surely, particularly the Charles Laughton Maureen O'Hara version?
Oh, and Quatermas Xperiment for the use of Westminster Abbey.

The current series of Inspector George Gently is being filmed in Durham and some footage yesterday showed there would be scenes up and around Palace Green - there's no way one would film in Durham and not make use of the world's most beautiful cathedral![]()

Well, how could we do justice without "A Canterbury Tale" Steve? Britmovie would never be the same without it
Which defines the thread in another dimension. Does the film actually HAVE to have been filmed in a cathedral, or will a fictional/studio version of the real thing do?
Liverpool Cathedral
Birth of the Beatles
Gloucester Cathedral and Worcester Cathedral (Is this unique)
The Choir 1995 tv series from the book by Joanna Trollope, (who had two other series in the mid nineties)

A studio version Cathedral has been mentioned, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" 1939, makes a pretty good job of recreating Victor Hugo's historic Paris and Notre Dame on a studio backlot in Hollywood.
