Really sorry to hear this news. Roland was a fine character player and a great comedy performer. I always loved the fact that he looked so 'middle class' but could play comedy characters who had a wonderful streak of lunatic anarchy in them. When he crossed that line his who face used to light up - brilliant.

One of my favourite performaces of his was actually an advert, where it ended up with his 'grandson' asking where grandma was. Roland had to break the news that she'd run off with Mr. So and so from the bridge club; dramatic pause then peals of laughter from him! Wonderful - always sets me off.

    Respect and RIP

This has come as a terrible shock to me. I was unaware of this news until today (2 June 2010). Roland was my English teacher at school (Ryde School, Isle of Wight) and when I left there in 1964, I continued to keep in touch with him periodically. He phoned me out of the blue last autumn and asked if we could meet, and I made arrangements to show him round Leicester's new Curve theatre, since I live not far from there now. Sadly, I had to cancel because of a family commitment. Recalling his last phone conversation to me, I realise now there were certain phrases he used that indicated that if we didn't meet soon, we might not meet at all - and tragically that has proved to be so. Roland's encouragement of my love of the theatre whilst I was at school proved to be of great influence in my subsequent career, and I am deeply sad that he has now gone at what is these days a relatively young age. He worked in the 70's and 80's with Leonard Rossiter, Dick Emery, Marty Feldman, and had a fairly long spell on "Coronation Street". He had, however, long given up acting because of his inability to learn his lines, but was still very committed in other ways to the profession. I shall miss receiving the annual Christmas card from the Actors' Benevolent Fund! God bless you, Roland.

As his IMDb listing shows, his repertoire was extensive, and, truly, he did work with some of the "greats". It was a pivilege to have known him.
