It is one of those moments of 'startle' when one turns on the TV mid soap and there is a name doing his/her stuff in East Enders, or Corrie (ugh!) Cornation Street.

It seems acceptable to enter that great retirement home Last Of The Summer Wine, (I think it should be inspected and receive grants) yet East Enders or The Street. No?

I have a terrible problem with names so I am relying on others to pick up and run with this thread. But so many established actors seem to retire to the long running soaps and neo-soaps, so much so that the TV companies seem to provide a valuable service which should almost attract some sort of Arts Council contribution to create another Dad's Army/LotSW.

Although I was a fan of Brookside I was absolutely devastated when the great Ian Hendry turned up in it , he played somebody's scruffy old waster dad.

Then just as I started appreciate that is what an actor does (ie play anybody) Ian of course past away . You could see by his stomach it was no padding or middle aged spread but of course something awful was going on in there.

I do know just what you mean Bernardo. I suppose it's a testament to the soap actors that they are able to inveigle themselves so convincingly and completely into the fabric of day to day life for so many people that when a "star" turns up in their midst (albeit these stars are only actors themselves when all's said and done of course) it pricks the bubble of alternative reality that the soap works so hard over decades to construct. So the viewer is "reminded" that they are essentially only watching an endless play after all, and not some gossipy spy window into other semi-"real" lives, which I assume is what brings comfort to so many loyal viewers .

I walked in the living room last night as Mrs Tonch was watching Coronation Street, only to see Nigel Havers wooing "Audrey". I couldn't help but burst out laughing...and got "The Glare" for my troubles

I am always shocked to see Tony Britton in corri as Gails gay father!

And yes, Nigel Havers as Audrey and Rita`s giggolo is quite a shock

Also, I never quite got over Edward Woodward turning up in Eastenders

Crossroads was the trail blazer for this IIRC Jean Kent, John Bentley and Derek Farr all appeared.

p.s. I'ts not Tony Britton in Corrie it is Michael Byrne ( who does have a resemblance).

Didn't Anthony Newley end up in Eastenders ? Almost as bad was the sight of Anthony Valentine in Coronation street and Amanda Donohoe in Emmerdale.
