Tyneside was a perfect location for the Tall Ships.

Can Hartlepool cope with thousands of visitors?

It has had plenty of time to prepare for it,so I can't see why not.

I used to do some offshore and ocean sailing - back when I was young and fit, a long time ago

I used to sail an 80ft ketch as part of a crew of 8-12. We'd sail it continuously on a watch system. Out in the North Sea in the middle of October when it's blowing force 8, gusting to 9 in the squalls. When she was in harbour the deck was 6 ft above the water. But in conditions like that, when your reaching or tacking, she heels over so far that the leeward deck is awash! We were wet, cold, tired, hungry and thoroughly enjoying ourselves

It's the sort of thing that I certainly wouldn't do now (not as crew) but I'm glad I did it when I did it.

But my younger brother did all that and then took it one stage further. He was in the crew of one of the tall ships that sailed into New York harbour on 4th July 1976 - the bicentennial. They had the full ticker tape parade through the streets and a helluva party

As it is the North East, any shortcomings will be easily overcome by the welcome that will be offered.

If the Tall Ships attract as many visitors as Sunderland Airshow, roads around Hartlepool will be gridlocked.

The Metro relieves traffic congestion on Tyneside and Wearside, but does not extend to Hartlepool.

Europe's biggest free airshow is held this year on 24th and 25th July. Tourists will stay in the region for a fortnight to attend both events, boosting overall attendances.

The Red Arrows opened the airshow last year, but many visitors missed the spectacle as they were stuck in traffic jams stretching out of the city.

Very tragic - dying doing something he loved. Our thoughts are with his family.
