    Agreed!

It was a bit like Richard Hammonds Saturday show only a lot more boring. Yawn!

    Bring back seaside special.

Another sign that the tv makers are getting desperate .

Glad The World At War is being repeated on the afternoons - now that is class television.

I watched part of this last night by accident while flicking channels - it IS appalling isn't it? With an utterly charmless presenter trying too hard to build suspense, contestants tasked with "guessing" the right answers from a list they've been given and everyone being "interviewed" pointlessly at every opportunity, it really is (along with Hammond's show) the cheapest of TV.

Not that many years ago we'd have seen Clive James or Chris Tarrant ridiculing this sort of show as being the worthless, lighter-than-helium tripe it appears to be, but now? I'm at a loss for words.

Only my view of course - and at 47 I'm clearly too old, so...sigh

The thing is, how many bleedin` different presenters do we have these days too? I had never seen or heard of this bloke before!

Water seems to be the trend now, probably because it`s the only thing they haven`t tried to entertain us with before now. It`s all a bit slap stick without being funny!

We have got the Richard Hammond programme, also` bring on the wall`, and now this. It`s all too much. It`s too plasticy (if that`s a proper word lol). I find it more exciting seeing people sit in a black chair saying pass every third question than watching this cheap unimaginative tripe!

I agree, these anonypresenters are appearing everywhere. But, that said, who'd want to ruin a "good" CV with this sort of drivel? You're right to say it's plasticky (the word'll do just fine lol) too: entirely disposable, yet - despairingly - apparently recyclable!

These programs are certainly aimed at younger audiences like myself, so that is probably why I actually quite enjoy 101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow and Total Wipeout.

We're in a new age of television now where producers want to test the boundaries of television to see what they can get away with - even if it's not what everybody wants to see.

But how does a programme like Total Wipeout test any boundaries? It is basically just a re-vamped version of It's A Knockout, which was on TV over 40 years ago. It is the same with most of the so-called 'edgy' programmes on TV today, they offer nothing new, they are often just a mish-mash of very old ideas with added swear words. I realise James, that to 'younger audiences' they may seem fresh et al, but in reality most of those boundaries you think are being tested were explored and sometimes crossed years ago.

It`s interesting to hear a younger persons perspective James

However Batman is right when he says it`s just repeating the past, and that`s the annoying thing.

The whole public involvement thing is getting too much for me too. Sure people always used to appear on game shows but now every member of the public see to come and go in most programmes these days, mainly without talent or, dare I say it, self respect with the things they are willing to do on things such as reality t.v. There is no talent or entertaiment in that for me.

I totally agree with you both, and what the younger viewers, who don't have the TV & Film education I've had other the past 12 months, do not realise is that they are being tricked into believing that these programs are fresh and are completely new ideas, because they are not old enough to remember It's a Knockout etc.

As for the public getting involved, I also agree with you. It all goes back to Andy Warhol in 1968 when he said "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.". Everybody wants to be on TV nowadays and they can do it by appearing on game-shows and making a fool out of themselves for the so-called entertainment of the viewing public.

So,james,if you are aware of the falsehoods and

brainwashing why take them on? Warhol is and was a crap artist and 'the emperors new clothes' (sorry,'pop-art movement) was the start of 'tv dinners' then 'remote control' then 'reality tv'! Shite lazy shite!

I think James seems interested in the history of film and t.v, that`s why he has joined us, and that`s great!. But through no fault of thier own perhaps the younger generation, are now as you say Jaycad brainwashed into thinking this is entertainment and even `drama` (oh the drama of big brother, how we we live without it???). I say no fault of there own even though they watch these programmes, but is it chicken and egg senorio? lol. Are t.v companies now just taking the p*** out of the younger generation so they can make crap t.v and still make big money? James, I admire that you have the intelllegence to study this subject, I am glad you have come here as these guys know what they are talking about. YOU are part of the younger generation who can change this by making a stand. I hope you do! This site will be briliant in helping you make comparisons of t.v and film and that will be a start.

There is a petition going around asking for classic horror to be put back onto mainstream t.v somewhere on here, someone else might know where the thread is. It is things like that that I think we need the younger generation involved in, and it doesn`t have to be about stuff that has already been produced, there are many good new writers that need to get thier work out there and need help. It would be much better to petition for good drama than reality t.v if it can be done. But the younger generation also need to switch off for it to change which is a hard thing for them to do, it`s like an addiction I suppose, and besides, there`s nowt else on lol. We aren`t saying that there isn`t quality today, many on here really admire the modern Dr Who and there have been some good dramas in recent years like Whitechapel which was popular on here. But on the whole good t.v is hard to come by these days. Keep posting James!

Yes, Bats, that's true, but sometimes boundaries need to be reinvented and in fact I won't turn away myself if I come across one of these shows. It is light entertainment where your brain doesn't need to work............

I didn't mean to imply that none of the programmes are worthwhile (TBW and I quite enjoy watching Total Wipeout together) .... but for the producers to claim that these programmes are 'original ideas' isn't actually true. Even Hollywood admits that they are 're-imagining and re-inventing' old ideas all the time, without too much of an adverse effect on ticket sales .... I just wish TV producers would come clean too and stop 'bigging themselves up' as a 'younger person' might say.
