I was surprised to see a nude dorsal view of Mai Zetterling (or her stunt double) in 1962's "Only Two Can Play." Was this the first "respectable" British movie to include nudity of any kind? What were some of the other early examples of exposed flesh in the 1960s or even the 1950s?

Yes, it's pretty close to the book, except for Anna Lee going along, and Roland Young is terrific. I doubt the script would win the Nobel Peace Prize but it's not as as Sanders of the River.

'Live now pay later' had a blatantly topless June Ritchie stepping into a bath, there's some topless photos in 'A kind of loving', as there are in Peeping Tom along with a blink and you'll miss it scene of Pamela Green nude on a couch.

The only mainstream film of the 60's with male full-frontal I can think of is 'Women in love'.

seeing the thread of Susan Hampshire's reminded me of 'During one night', not sure how mainstream it actually was on release but there's a nude Susan viewed from the rear and a topless prostitute who is trying to arouse an american airman who saw his mate being eunachised in the cockpit whilst on a mission.

Madeleine Carroll in The First Born (1928); for a few frames either side of this one, the sponge isn't quite as modestly positioned.

It's a tough job, 'research' but someone's got to do it

Come off it Captain, you've seen the film....it may be brief, but it's not missable...or accidental.

I'll just say that a couple of brief frames of nekkid Madeleine Carroll didn't make the same impression on me that it did on you (ie I didn't notice ). You can revisit the scene at the Mediatheque though.

The gypsy dancer's nipples were quite visible through her flimsy dress in The Master of Ballantrae (1953).

    Wikipedia has this:

In 1966, the British-Italian film Blowup became the first mainstream English-language film to show a woman's pubic hair, although the particular shot was only a few seconds long. (Some sources, such as Playboy magazine in their History of Sex in Cinema series, have stated that the pubic hair exposure was unintended.)

Well...... Susan Hampshire appears nude (very tastefully from the rear, and in a long shot ) in During One Night (1961).....

    See:

The nude scene was probably added by producer Kenneth Rive of Gala films so that the film obtained an 'X' certificate, for marketing purposes......

The nude 60s: a fair bit of male and female nudity in 1968's "If..." Of course, that fell on the other side of a cultural revolution.

British filmmakers were trying on nudity since the 1950s. Mostly, the BBFC would cut these scenes. Man Who Could Cheat Death and Circus of Horrors were two films in which topless shots were removed by the BBFC (in Circus there is a shot of Erika Remberg's bare bottom through a frosted shower glass still though). In addition, we have topless versions of scenes which were released as clothed in the UK. Jack the Ripper I think is the earliest film for which this footage seems to have survived. The Image DVD of The Flesh and the Fiends alos contains the "nudie" version of the film and the UK version.

As someone mentions above, there is a topless shot of Pamela Green in Peeping Tom.

The BBFC used to be OK with nudity of black women in their "natural setting". Zulu (1963) has several shots of topless young Zulu women and that got a "U" certificate.

The earlist US film I have seen with nudity is Intolerance. There is also some brief nudity in The Sign of the Cross. That was before the MPAA censorship clamp down.

There's some precode Maureen O'Sullivan nudity in Tarzan and His Mate (1934), which MGM edited out later, but I believe it may have been restored since.

This is all intact in the DVD release. The nudity is mostly a nude swim and it is Maureen O'Sullivan's body double in action.

I believe there is also some brief pre-code nudity in one of the films in the Forbidden Hollywood series on R1 DVD.

The Yellow Ticket has some in a bathhouse scene, IIRC.
