    Daily Telegraph

    by Paul Thompson in Miami:

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angelina Jolie are competing to play Dame Elizabeth Taylor in a Hollywood film about her relationship with Richard Burton, according to reports.

Industry sources have named Russell Crowe, the New Zealand actor, Briton Clive Owen and Colin Farrell, the Irish star, as possible Burtons.

Mike Nichols, the Oscar-winning American director, reportedly wants to make the film, which would be based on the book 'Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and the Marriage of the Century'.

Hollywood sources told the US TV show 'Entertainment Tonight' that Jolie, 35, and Zeta-Jones, 40, had expressed an interest. Jolie has already been lined up to take on Taylor's most famous role as Cleopatra. It was while making the 1963 epic that Taylor met and fell in love with Burton.

They married after Taylor divorced Eddie Fisher, her third husband, in 1964. A year after their 1974 divorce the couple wed again. That union lasted just ten months.

Taylor, 78, lives alone in Beverly Hills, California. Burton died in Switzerland in 1984 aged 58.

And presumably she would have consented to it being made?

They can make it without her permission because she's a public figure, but they can't libel her.

Surely it's the role the youthful Dame Joanie was created for.

I can imagine CJS in the role, but AJ....? Do me a favour!

And no-one could play Burton but Burton!

They might as well forget it.

Actually, I bet once you get the wig and the make-up on both CZJ and AJ would make passable-looking Taylors. Maybe AJ could play the younger Taylor and CZJ could be brought in for her later "bloated" years.

As for Burton, I reckon Crowe could make a decent stab at it. He's a reasonable enough actor when he chooses to be and he has that "smouldering" quality. Can't see Farrel in the role, frankly.

Not if the latest celebrity press is to be believed......

I don't think Liz was ever as skinny as some stars of today feel they have to be, so maybe playing her could give all of them some much-needed beauty therapy...

Not that being not skinny seemed to make her any happier, mind you...

I think Daniel Craig would be able to pull off Richard Burton, if you get my meaning. A few years ago Joanne Whalley would have been an excellent choice as a mid-fame Liz Taylor.

Sadly, it wouldn't surprise me if this project ended up with Megan Fox and Zac Efron.

It won't be Megan Fox and Zac Efron.
