    Hi.

I watched thie Cater street hangman last night and really enjoyed it. A bit slow at the beginning but when you get into the story and the characters it is enjoyable.

I have tried to read the Anne Perry books but I have given up on them, not for me, just can`t get into them, but I was pleasently suprised at this production.

The first of several British TV adaptations of Ann Perry's "Inspector Pitt" mystery novels, The Cater Street Hangman stars Eoin McCarthy as Thomas Pitt, an extremely class-conscious police detective working London in 1881. The case at hand involves the brutal and bizarre murders of several young girls who have recently visited the vicarage in a well-to-do neighborhood. Much to his surprise (and secret delight), Inspector Pitt is aided in his investigation by Charlotte Ellison (Keeley Hawes), an independent, free-thinking young aristocrat who has obviously set her stylish cap for the humble lawman. Fans of Perry's original novel should be advised that the ending has been changed, eliminating all hints of what once was known as "the love that dare not speak its name." In the United States, The Cater Street Hangman was broadcast by cable's A&E network on December 19, 1998. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I liked the Cater Street Hangman too. Charlotte and Thomas don't quite fit the image I had of them in my mind, which probably varies from reader to reader, but the production was good, it captured the foggy, Victorian atmosphere of the Rice series, and I watched it to the end.

Given the popularity of the Thomas Pitt series, I was surprised that more of Rice's books weren't adapted for the screen and the series continued the way the Agatha Christie books have been. In their favour, there were constant and intriguing main characters for readers to follow vs. let's say the Dick Francis novels which I really like but have different main characters (except for a few which focus on one character, e.g. Whiplash) and are not as feasible to build a series around, alas.

But I equally enjoy reading the books, and am especially intrigued by the character of Inspector William Monk, the other of Rice's ongoing series. Rice is particularly good at drawing a character, interior and exterior in depth on paper. I would love to see that put on screen. For my taste, throughout the Monk series, Rice goes on a bit too long about the trials of Hester (Monk's wife) as a nurse, her work with Florence Nightingale in the Crimea, and unnecessarily long accounts by Hester of the background of various wars which detract from the ongoing tension and focus of the plot. But, overall, I enjoy the books and I toss one into a carryall for a train ride or night away from home.

Why do you say Anne Perry is infamous? It does ring a bell, was she the one who murdered her friends mother? Am I right?

    Michelle, thst's it!

Yes, she's one of the 2 girls who committed one of the most notorious murders in New Zealand's criminal history. They made a film about it starring a young Kate Winslet.
