The Shootist (1976) is a fine film, a fitting close to a great career. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) is a bona fide classic of the genre - and one of John Ford's most fascinating works.
The rest are a bit blah though! Oh boy, 1940s programme fillers. And Wayne's vanity project The Angel and the Badman, which I've always found very boring.
They could have chosen some obscure but genuinely great movies from his back-catalogue... I'd have fought my way into the newsagent for a copy of They Were Expendable!
I agree - the first two, worth getting. The others? Nah. At least they aren't his singing cowboy films of the 1930s though![]()
The ones you have to send for are public domain movies, You can pick them up over here in the dollar or two dollar bins,

I think I've seen just about every John Wayne film, my father having dragged us as a family to see them whenever they came out. When my father died, my mother finally admitted that after 50+ years of marriage, she could never stand Mr. Wayne and all the videos of his films in the house were junked.
Personally, I don't mind him in The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance, etc., but he's certainly not in my top ten favourite actors list.
John Wayne actually could act when he got a director to challenge him, but most of his later movies are just a collection of Wayne mannerisms. He is particularly lazy in the Howard Hawks' films after Red River and those movies with his fictional character's name is in the title. The Shootist, his final film, has a good performance. He was also surprisingly good in the Cowboys, playing a believable real person for once.
I like John Wayne and TBW is also fast becoming a big fan. I enjoy most of his westerns (inc the really early stuff) and in the right role he could deliver a fine acting performance. The Sons of Katie Elder is my favourite. However, nothing will ever get me to forgive him for the monstrosity that is Big Jim McClain.![]()
