Our hero returns from work as he thinks normally, only to find wife etc all asking where he's been for some days. All he remembers is leaving work and catching train home, as well as calling into his usual pub for a drink on the way home. As I recall there is a murder somewhere and he needs to backtrack and trace his steps to prove he wasn't the killer.

It was black and white, 50s type setting with a well known lead. I thought it was called 'Lost Weekend' but of course it wasn't, that was the US dipsomaniac epic with Ray Milland.

    Yes of course!! Many thanks

I should have remembered really, as the play was by R C Sherriff who went to my school (some years before I did)!

Armstrong and Miller did a good variation this in which Miller (on his way to the church to be married) goes into a bank to withdraw some cash. He is persuaded to apply for a credit card in order to win a free trip to Dusseldorf which will "literally take a few minutes".

He eventually gets home on what he thinks is the next day and knocks on his front door to be greeted by a stranger who is now married to his financee since he has been gone for five years...

Ray Milland's character in Lost Weekend was an amateur. I've lost weeks, months even. I don't know what I did, but I had a great time

Yes, I love this film. I have it on DVD copied from my own TV recording onto VHS, but it's not exactly in pristine condition.

I really enjoyed the performance of Campbell Singer as the Inspector. In some ways he reminds me of Roland Culver as the DI in The Vicious Circle - another favourite!
