The days of when the elite of British acting wouldn't do TV commercials appears to be over. For years many would only do them abroad - Olivier was the face of Polaroid, Gielgud - Paul Masson Wines, Robert Morley - British Airways, Sean Connery - Spam. No Dame Helen extols the virtues of WII and Sir Derek brings good tiding from Sony no less. Have to say I quite liked his commercial with its daft Dickensian allusions. Dame Helen will doubtless have a personal trainer.

I'm sure it will boost the audience for his forthcoming Lear though

It just has to be! I saw his Macbeth and it was tragic. But not in the good way.

He was a pretty bad Hamlet too in the old BBC version.

I didn't see his Macbeth but I saw him do Richard II and III with his own company (David Rintoul was Richmond/ Bolingbroke) and it was like being transported back to the 1930s. Everyone left a gap round him and didn't get between him and the audience while he emoted. It was like I imagine seeing Frank Benson or Henry Ainley must have been.

At his worst he can be mannered, camp and theatrical in the worst sense - which is why his film/tv career has never really reached the same heights as other KBES/DBES I suspect. He was superb in Breaking the Code and Beckett but as I mentioned earlier all at sea in th scottish play.

Still Sir Derek can take comfort in the fact that his bank balance is inflating due to good tidings from Sony. There will be no 'bah humbug' from his accountant
