I think the person you are looking for was a Welshman by the name of Idwal Robling.
Does anyone remember this. In the early 70's (I think) there was a nationwide search
for a new football commentator. I forget whether it was ITV or BBC but there was a
panel of judges one of which was Sir Alf Ramsey. I recall future pundit Ian St John was
one of the finalists but missed out because Sir Alf thought his Scottish accent was a bit
too heavy. The guy who won (his name escapes me) was quite popular for a while but I
think he finished up in regional rather than national TV.![]()

I think the comentator you are on about was Hugh Johns, a Welshman with a deep vioce.
I remember Hugh Johns, very distinctive voice he had. I think Johnallan is correct though hank, the name "Idwal Robling" definitely rings a bell!
Definately BBC, (I thought it was for Match Of The Day) & not Hugh Johns who was already an established commentator for ATV, he used to do Star Soccer in the midlands region on Sundays.
He was also ITV's commentator for the 1966 World Cup final, and was overshadowed by Wolstheholme's famous "They think it's all over" line.
Isn't it Hugh Johns' voice on the "Goal" film of the '66 World Cup?
