Sounds like Dark of the Sun aka The Mercenaries with Rod Taylor and Jim Brown. The man who kills himself and his wife to avoid being captured by the Simbas is played by Andre Morell.
Hi everyone, a colour film I'm wondering the title of is set in an African country, maybe immediate post-war or maybe 50's or 60's, all I can recall are scenes where the native population are on the rampage killling foreigners, a steam train attempts to escape the mayhem but as it ascends a gradient the carriage becomes detached and a couple commit suicide rather than be slaughtered by the mob, in another scene a man is captured and held down but they're the only scenes I recall, any ideas please?

Definitely sounds like Dark of the Sun (The Mercenaries). This used to crop up regularly on TCM in a slightly cut version. You can probably buy it on Ebay.
Thanks for the replies warfilmbuff and m35541, The Mercenaries it is then, cheers.......![]()
It doesn't appear to be available 'officially', but you can get a very good copy here (nicely packaged too) ....

It's a great film, based on a Wilbur Smith novel and has a wonderful soundtrack by Jacques Loussier which is available on CD. The film is available on region O DVD via Dark of the Sun
Our threadstarter's title "film SET in Africa is a truism in that "The Mercenaries" as it was known in the UK was filmed in entirety in Jamaica and not in Africa. I work in UK and Jamaica for a Jamaican arts/media/education trust piecing together "local history to the world" and "The Mercenaries" is of poignant history since the railway line on which the film was made was is many places obliterated in the Hurricane Gilbert of 1989 leaving many communities separated.
Adverts and photos to post in due course along the way to a website creation in 2012 to mark the 50 years of Jamaican Independence and the presentation of JA in the movies during the years 1962-2012.
