Vague memory from youth

Hi I was wondering if this rings a bell with anyone. I have a vague memory of an animated film from when I was younger. I only remember certain things about it such as the film had wizards that rode flying dragons whose colours matched those of the wizards outfits. There were also humans in it who got dragged into the wizard world (?) and I think this was via a chess board I know the man in it ends up in armour at some point to battle bad dragons. If this makes sense to anyone any ideas what it was called I remember enjoying this film as a child and would love to watch it again.

Thanks Bruiser I think this is the right film - seems so dated now but cant wait to watch it again. Glad I wasnt going mad with the plot!!
