20 episodes!
How long do they last? How regularly are the BBC showing them?
Those of you who like a bit of Scandinavian murder and mayhem might be interested in this .....
BBC4 - 22/01/2011 - 9pm
The Killing - The brutal murder of a young girl launches an extended police investigation. Detective Sarah Lund is supposed to leave for a new life in Sweden, but can't bring herself to leave the case behind. The girl's parents and friends struggle to cope with their loss. Troels Hartmann is campaigning to be mayor of Copenhagen, but struggles when links are revealed between city hall and the murder. Over a time span of twenty days, suspect upon suspect is sought out as violence and political pressures cast their shadows over the hunt for the killer.
2007 - 20 episodes
This is from the only review on IMDb ...
"This is a roller coaster ride for 20 episodes, at least the first 12 ~ 14 episodes they feed new clues so another person of the fixed cast becomes the main suspect. Later on it's still thrilling but it's more of a wrap up, but by that time your hooked and want to watch the rest."

Much as I love Wallender its starting to confuse me a bit now as - just how many blooming Wallenders are there?![]()
I'd hope there's hundreds - can't get enough of them myself. "The Killing" looks to be a great watch too, apparently being - according to at least one account I've read - similar in style and quality to the excellent French "Spiral"..... My Sky+ planner's poised at the ready...![]()
I have now watched four episodes and am completely hooked. It does have a similarity plotwise to the equally excellent Spiral, but has a slighter darker edge to it. The acting, writing and direction are all superb. The BBCs Wallander is the only current UK series that is as good as the sort of mystery series currently being turned by our European neighbours. I can't recommend The Killing highly enough.
ps - all six episodes of Branagh's superb Wallander series are being repeated on BBC1 over the next few weeks
The Killing has been remade in the US. It's set in Seattle and apparently sticks very closely to the original. Photos to follow.
The Killing has been the highlight of the week for me. So many layers, twists, great script and acting. Watching the parents lives after the death of their daughter has your full attention.
Freddy
I watched episodes 9 and 10 last night so am now up to date. I am totally with you there Freddy, it is the best thing on TV by a mile and the writing, acting and direction are uniformly excellent. Special kudos must go to the actor playing Theis, he is absolutely superb, his underplaying of an extremely complex character, inc the portrayal of his grief at losing his daughter (which I can vouch for from personal experience) is spot on. I cannot recommend this series highly enough.

The Killing DVD box-set is available to pre-order from Amazon 38-99 and will be released on 4th April 2011 and out of the 27 Amazon reviews 26 give The Killing 5 stars the other giving it 4.
I must catch-up on the episodes on BBCiPlayer.

As the entire country seemed to be recommending this I watched it all in huge chunks over the last couple of days. It is splendid stuff. The only caveat is that its 20 episode length means that it is open to an occasional repititious cliffhanger and the whodunnit element does turn into a 'suspect of the week' scenario.
The sequel Forbrydelsen II is a mere 10 hours, so possibly that will be tighter and even better.
Rumour has it that when this superb series ends, Spiral series 3 starts.
I hope this is true.![]()
Just a note of quite interesting trivia ...
politician Troels Hartmann ... Lars Mikkelsen is the brother of James Bond (Casino Royale) villain Mads.
Having caught up on BBC iPlayer, I think The Killing, with it's ingeniously complex plotting
and superb acting performances, is the best programme on televison by a distance ...

As the superb Danish murder-mystery thriller ... The Killing ... reaches it's climax ... here is an article from The Observer featuring the wonderfully gifted actress Sofie Grbl who plays the main character of the series Detective Inspector Sarah Lund … the second series will be shown on BBC4 later this year.

Sofie is indeed excellent in the role. However, the star of the show for me is Bjarne Henriksen as Theis Birk Larsen. His is a wonderfully underplayed portrayal of profound grief, mixed with anger, confusion and despair. I also like the portrayal of Meyer by Soren Malling .... no cliched 'troubled cop' he. Meyer is a perfectly rounded character, anxious to get the job done, but not blind to the political game that has to be played if he wants to keep his job.
After all this praise I have to say that I thought the show took it's first false-step last week .... the emergence of not one, but two, 'mysterious' videotapes was perhaps a little bit too much for one episode to carry. However, The Killing is still the best show on TV by miles at the moment and I feel confident that it's normal excellence will be maintained till the end.
Only two weeks and four episodes to go and Mrs Bat is convinced she's has sussed it out ..... I understand where she's coming from, but I remain unconvinced.
The show was back on form after last week's slight wobble and featured a fine example of one of those TV/film moments when you gasp out loud and cry "I didn't see that coming!" Gut wrenching and absolutely amazing telly. I can hardly contain my excitement for next week's final two episodes!

I agree Bats ... it's been a long time since I looked forward to a programme so much as The Killing.
Last night's two episodes were absolutely sensational ... the Radio Times indicated an incredible and shocking conclusion to episode 18 but it still took me totally by surprise.
This is television mystery-thriller drama at it's finest and some of the best televison I've seen in a long time.

The Killing ... final episodes 19 and 20 ... Saturday 26th March 2011 ... 9.00-11.05pm ...
obsessed Detective Inspector Lund (Sofie Grbl) who has been magnificent throughout ...
spots the last piece in the complex jigsaw.
I promise you that the final scenes will be more than you can bear ...
When the final episode was broadcast on Danmark's Radio (DR), Denmark's BBC equivalent, 80 per cent of the country's viewing public tuned in for the solution to the mystery ... (by comparison, 56 per cent of the British TV audience watched last year's X Factor Final).

The last two episodes were absolutely superb. Both plotlines had satisfactory outcomes and were written, performed and directed brilliantly. Absolutely perfect TV .... let's hope series 2 (which starts later this year) is as good as series 1. The trailer certainly looked good.
And just as I was wondering what to do with myself, the BBC announces Spiral 3 will be replacing The Killing next week.
