It was about 13-14 years ago, i watched this black and white film on tv, all i remember is this:

its about a police inspector/man who searches for a serial killer, who goes killing people during the night. the killer is a man and so is the inspector. Now it is similar to jack the ripper 1959 film, but it isnt that.

i dont know which year the film was released or who the actors are, but i know for a fact that it is either a 30's 40's 50's or a 60's film in Black and white. Please can you name this film or give a list of possible films of this kind. and also it isnt an american film, its british, the characters in that film speak proper english, and the film was set in i believe in the UK.

Do you remember when it was set? Does it remind you of the Ripper film because it was set in Victorian times? Was it 'modern day'?
Can you remember something happening? Perhaps a piece of dialogue or just a tiny scene that you remember standing out? How did the killer do his deeds? A gun? A knife? Strangling? Was there a woman involved in any way? A mother, a girlfriend? Were there any jobs or places that were memorable - like a doctor, or a hospital or a forest or a fire engine ... Just any little clue?

its been a very long time since i saw that film, and find it very difficult to remember, but here are some scenes that i remember:

1: the film doesnt reveal who the killer is until the end
2: when the killer kills his victims, it is in the newspaper
3: the inspector(the man trying to find the killer) usually has a stick, hes not old, hes middle aged, in one scene he hides something in his stick(walking stick), i dont know what, but im guessing crystal or something small.
4: the inspector goes into the horse wagon to his home.
5: i dont belive there were any guns involved, maybe maybe not, hard to say.

thats all i remember, i dont remember what happens in the beginning or the end, as i said, its been a very long time, so its hard for me to remember, and no it was not set in modern day, it is old times. very old and if i see a scene of the film i will definately know if it is that film or not.

It could be an American film like moonfleet points out because if it is as old as the forties, a lot of American films are set in England with British or British sounding actors.

But The Lodger doesn't wait for the end to reveal the killer.

I'm thinking it might not be British or American, but one of those German Edgar Wallace movies from Germany that often were dubbed in English and set in England and had an English Inspector on the case. Never saw any of them.

its definately not the lodger, nor is the film dubbed. i believe now that it is either 40,50 or 60's film. Anyway if there is no film or nobody can find the film i am looking for, is there any websites on the internet where i can find a whole list of ALL BLACK AND WHITE BRITISH FILMS of the 40's 50's and 60's apart from wikipedia?

Go to IMDB advanced search - IMDb: Advanced Title Search. There will be several thousand though. How about The Hour of 13?

These stills are from a film called "The Lodger" made in 1944 and starred Merle Oberon and George Sanders and the photograps show the actor Laird Cregar who died at the early age of 31 and was directed by John Brahm. I have several film that Laird Cregar appeared in and I can identify him from the stills. Please refer to the attached link to IMDB.

    Laird Cregar

I wonder if its an episode from Colonel March of Scotland Yard. Another that comes to mind is not British and is with Victor Buono called I think The Stangler but I could be wrong on the title.
