It is about 35 years ago since I saw this film so my memory may have made some alterations.
The films starts with someone escaping from a Mental Asylum, killing in the process, but you see it from a first person perspective; so you don't know who the escapee is.
The rest of the film is a process of misdirection. A male driver picks up a female hitch hiker. He has voyeuristic tendencies & some abnormal behaviour. For example there is a scene in which he is peeping through a keyhole watching her dress. Another scene where they are spotted together & their photograph ends up in the newspapers indicating one of them is in danger. Again suggesting the female is the victim.
The final scene, is the reveal, in which the Police arrive just in time to find her strangling the male to death but it is to late.
I have a feeling the lead actress is someone quite famous but I never get anywhere trying to work out the title of the film.
I do remember it being British, colour & presumably from the late 60�s early 70�s.
Can anyone help?

Definitely -that's the exact plot. Simon Ward, Hayley Mills plus Sterling Hayden in a very strange role.
Thats got to be it, thanks folks, very much appreciated. I shall now go & track it down & see if it is as good as I remember.

This is a great little chiller starring the lovely Hayley Mills. It deserves a dvd release...
