Some terrible footage here on TV of the Christchurch earthquake.

Heartwrenching scenes! We have a few britmovie members from New Zealand I think.

I hope they are safe & well. It seems theres a major disaster somewhere every week

Terrible story Wadsy. I have just finished reading a detailed account and apparently there are still dozens unaccounted for.

Terrible news, hoping the grim toll doesn't rise too much more.

Our 24 hour Weather Channel covers it with regular hourly updates. The destruction of that city is terrible. Apparently the quake was not as high as the last NZ quake on the Richter scale, but it was far more damaging because it was shallow. Even the suburbs are badly hit.

Just awful, terrible to hear a lady a poor lady speaking on her mobile phone trapped in a building Hopefully she has been found but how many people must be in a similar predicament too horrible to contemplate. Best wishes to NZ BritMovians.

It's terrible. I watched one clip of a building collapsing while people were running out of it. It must be a terrifying experience. Those poor people.

Apparently tremors in New Zealand happen every few days! I had no idea of this. 9 out of 10 earthquakes in a huge region across the Southern hemisphere are in NZ. The pictures of this one are devastating. My heart goes out to everyone over there - what a tragedy.

I'm beginning to think this planet was never intended for human habitation. Floods, fires, earthquakes, tsunamis...

I'm too upset about scenes on tonight's news and the updates on Yahoo7 to even comment about them.

what i dont quite understand is that so many buildings have collapsed bering in mind that i believe that buildings do have to be constructed in a special way to absorb the shock waves in cities such as Christchurch.Unfortunately each year there are always around three or four major earthquales. We are in the UK are very lucky that we dont live near a major fault in the arths crust or near one of the plates.
