Desperately sad to learn this news. I met Elisabeth a couple of times and she was a lovely, lovely lady and I know she will be sorely missed. My deep condolences to Brian and Sadie.
Terrible, tragic news and I am greatly upset, having grown up watching her on Dr Who. Condolences to her family and friends.

Shocked, amazed, saddened. My daughter will be upset...I thik she saved her best performance as Sarah Jane when she returned in School Renuion with David Tennant's Doctor, and K9

This is a huge shock. Elisabeth Sladen always seemed so fit and always looked great. I think her scenes with the Doctor in 'School Reunion' were among her best. Her memory will live on through her remarkable work. RIP.

Elisabeth Sladen has passed away at the age of 63.
The actress, who is best known for portraying Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures, died this morning. She had been suffering from cancer.
Sladen first appeared as Sarah Jane in the long-running BBC sci-fi alongside the Third Doctor Jon Pertwee, and went on to star with Tom Baker and David Tennant. She was given her own spinoff series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, in 2007.
Doctor Who Magazine tweeted: "With great sadness, DWM must report the loss of our beloved Sarah Jane, actress Elisabeth Sladen. The best of best friends. Too, too sad."
Sarah Jane Adventures creator and former Doctor Who Lead Writer Russell T Davies said: "I absolutely loved Lis. She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful. The universe was lucky to have Sarah Jane Smith; the world was lucky to have Lis."
Current Doctor Who head writer Steven Moffatt added: "'Never meet your heroes' wise people say. They weren't thinking of Lis Sladen. Sarah Jane Smith was everybody's hero when I was younger, and as brave and funny and brilliant as people only ever are in stories.
"But many years later, when I met the real Sarah-Jane - Lis Sladen herself - she was exactly as any child ever have wanted her to be. Kind and gentle and clever; and a ferociously talented actress, of course, but in that perfectly English unassuming way."
Sladen leaves behind her husband, actor Brian Miller, and her daughter Sadie.
This is very sad news. Sudden, too, as I didn't know she was ill. RIP

Elizabeth was a vivacious, lovely, classy lady ... a very fine actress with a wonderful personality.
I loved the way Elizabeth developed Sarah-Jane into such a memorable and scintillating character.

Sarah Jane Smith has always been my favourite Doctor Who Assistant and she always will be.
Terrible news - she was far and away my favourite Dr Who assistant. RIP Elisabeth.

This is terrible. Such sad and shocking news! Like many contributors here I had no idea she was ill. She still looked fantastic! She was so well cast as Sarah Jane Smith. She will be much missed. It's hard to believe. What a shock!
My condolences to Elisabeth's family. A wonderful personality has been lost.
