Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, known to many as the BRIEF ENCOUNTER theme, has been voted the nation's favourite piece of classical music.

The work, featured throughout the 1945 film about lost love, starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard, came top in the poll of Classic FM listeners.

Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending came second in the annual poll, after coming top in the previous four years.

Mozart was the most popular composer with 20 entries in the list of 300.

    . . .

Not surprising, given that BE is one of the most popular films in the UK. (In fact, I recall reading that same poll result about the Rach 2 for an earlier poll.)

Another favorite of mine is Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, in particular the first movement, which iirc was also cited in the poll results that I read.

Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 is played to absolutely beautiful, poignant effect in Brief Encounter ... Rach 2 is also used to marvellous effect to complement a smouldering Marilyn Monroe in a fabulous fantasy sequence in The Seven Year Itch.

I voted for Beethoven's Emperor Piano Concerto No.5, Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and Beethoven's Symphony No.7 in the Classic FM poll.

For Brief Encounter the Rachmaninov concerto was played by the young Australian pianist Eileen Joyce, and the complete recording is still available on the Dutton label. I believe the same recording was also used for the soundtrack of 'The Seventh Veil' (James Mason, Ann Todd, Herbert Lom, 1945).
