I've just learned of this Foreign Legion flick, starring Gene Hackmann and some other fine actors. Is anyone at Britmovie familiar with it and if so what's the verdict ?

It's not too bad. The photography is good and the action scenes are well done, but it's all a bit ho hum overall, with Hackman not seeming to be that interested in the proceedings.

Gene Hackman doesn't rate this film,I remember reading an interview years ago in which he says accepting this film was one of the big mistakes in his career, at the time he was offered Peter Finch's role in "Network", he went for "March or Die" instead because the wage packet was considerably more.

I must admit I havn't seen the film for years, but I do seem to remember reading about it in one of the Medved 'Turkey' books that it was a huge flop. Looking on IMDB you can see for yourself - $9m costs, but took just $1m in the US. Lew Grade made it, which added to his more than fair share of failed projects. I have to admit, a Foriegn Legion film in 1977 was probably not going to set the tills ringing (even the poster is old fashioned), especially since Mart Feldman released 'The Very Last Remake of Beau Geste' the same year. If your films subject is being spoofed the same time as your making it, you've got a problem.

See what you think of it, its about 3 on Amazon.

Thanks to you all, if I come across it for cheap here in the U.S. I'll pick it up. But it doesn't sound like a "must see' flick.

There was quite a big effort to push Terence Hill into the Hollywood market, and this is one of a couple of films that was part of the masterplan. Big budget, great cast, Hackman, Van Sydow and respectable budget. Sadly the film is not too good, but the major problem is Hill, he just does not have the ability to carry it off. Give it a miss.
