Having read the Gary Waldhorn thread elsewhere on this forum, I was reminded of "Brush Strokes", the series that he was in in the late eighties. I used to watch it regularly and enjoyed it but I cannot remember how it ended or was it just gently dropped ?

I think we were left with some loose ends that still needed tying up - not sure if Jacko found happiness - wish I could remember more - oh Chisel!

I met Elizabeth Counsell and her husband, David Simeon, in my local Waitrose while we were doing our weekly shopping a few weeks ago and she cheerfully told me "no, don't worry, I'm not dead just concentrating on the theatre rather than the telly!" Both seemed on good form if quite a bit older, of course.

To give a bit more detail ...
      Spoiler:

Elmo sails away with the fabulous five, the girls he picked up in the casino where he let it be known that he was an opal millionaire.
Veronica & Marcello get married and fly away on their honeymoon planning to start a new life in Scicily.
Veronica leaves the house in the capable hands of Lesley who's had various reality checks in the last series.
Veronica leaves Sandra in charge of the painting & decorating business and Elmo leaves Lesley in charge of the wine bar.
Jean & Eric head off to the west country or somewhere

So everyone gets their reward and all loose ends are neatly tied ... except for Jacko

The final scene has them saying goodbye at the wine bar. After seeing Elmo off Lesley & Sandra comment about how strangely things have turned out with them both being businesswomen now. Individually, they both make an offer to Jacko.

The very last scene has Jacko looking from one to the other of them, walking to the door where he looks back at the two women who stand there expectantly. A big smile appears on Jack's face and ... freeze frame, end music, roll credits

It was a great series, quirky but very cleverly written (Esmonde & Larbey) with wonderful characters and great performances. Karl Howman, Jackie Lye, Howard Lew Lewis, Elizabeth Counsell, Gary Waldhorn, Nicky Croydon, Mike Walling, Erika Hoffman, Carol Harrison, Adam Bareham and all the others.

I am also a big fan of the Comedy series Brush Strokes, but i enjoyed the earlier episodes better than the later ones, i thought Brush Strokes became silly in the later episodes, there were 40 episodes of Brush Strokes and Gary Waldhorn played Lionel Bainbridge in the first 26 episodes, i thought Brush Strokes was never quite the same after Lionel's departure and i also missed Elmo's Pub, i thought that Elmo's Pink Wine Bar was an eyesore, i agree that Brush Strokes was a great series with wonderful characters and great performances, i thought that the first Lesley (Lionel's Daughter) played by Kim Thomson was far better than the second Lesley played by Erika Hoffman, i have always thought that Brush Strokes was a great series when Lionel Bainbridge (Gary Waldhorn) was in it and also when Elmo still had his Pub, i found a lot of the later episodes of Brush Strokes silly and disappointing and for me Brush Strokes was no longer a great series like it had been when the earlier episodes were shown, i think it was Jacko (Karl Howman) that kept me watching Brush Strokes when Lionel and Elmo's Pub were no longer in the series.

I agree that it was at its best when Lionel was in it, the first few years. It struggled a bit after he left but then some of the others characters blossomed and they developed some very good storylines.

I liked Elmo, from what I remember he was excited about the prospect of emigrating to Australia, looking forward to the beach and surf, when he was asked what part of Australia he was going to live at his reply was "pretty name it is.........Alice Springs"

Having had my memories of this wonderful show revived, I checked on it's availability on DVD. Series one & two are coming out in mid September but no mention of the other 3 series. Being a completist, I am never keen on buying part series sets in case the rest are never released, I think I'll wait.

Series 1 & 2 were released on DVD in 2004
They didn't release series 3 back then either - neither did they release series 4 or 5

Loved this show as a kid, but it's one of those - like Boon - that I daren't revisit in case it's not as good as I remember. Every time I see Chris Ayoade on TV nowadays, I flash back to Mike Walling as Eric. I think it's the hair.

Wouldn't it be nice if the BBC were to repeat the odd show such as Brush Strokes, Citizen Smith, The Other One etc instead of giving us another chance to see Del Boy or My Family. The Beeb has four channels now, surely this isn't too much to ask ?. or are there actually rights issues involved?.

I am currently rewatching Brush Strokes (not for the first time) and i am enjoying the series very much, Brush Strokes was a great series when Lionel Bainbridge (Gary Waldhorn) was in it, i have always thought that Brush Strokes was never the same after Lionel's departure and i won't be watching beyond episode 26, below is a screencap of Bernadette Shortt as Celia, from episode 9 of Brush Strokes (1986).

He then leaves the wine bar, and outside, tosses a coin. The last frame as he looks at the result of the toss ....

A good reminder that Karl Howman was a very good actor (trained by Alastair & Naomi Sim, in a similar way to George Cole). But then he's been sadly under-used on TV and relegated to doing ads for cleaning products

I hate cop-out endings like that. It seem as though the writers didn't know how to finish it.

Yes, he'd get a lot of beach and surf in Alice Springs!
