In a nailbiting finish to this year's World Championship Road Race, Britain's Mark Cavendish took the gold medal for Britain for the first time in 46 years, bravo Mark.

What a great ride, not only by him but the whole of the team, David Millar was spot on as team captain and Bradley Wiggins' speed and gutsy performance at the final stage was phenomenal.

All the British teams and riders did well, cycling has certainly used its lottery funding to produce great riders, looking forward to the Olympics, will be a great spectacle.

    Magnificent.
Cavendish showed his unshakable belief and determination to lift the coveted green jersey in the Tour De France and it was great to see him clinch another landmark title here.
Fitting that he should be quick to thank a great team around him.

For me, he's the best sportsperson we have at the moment and I hope that's reflected in this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Impeccable timing and teamwork combined with incredible intensity and dedication. That was the most exciting race I have seen in a long while.

Excellent, and thoroughly deserved. He will no doubt acknowledge the fantastic contribution of his team mates. He now joins the ranks of Chris Hoy and Tom Simpson.
Soon it'll be Bradley Wiggins when he wins the Tour de France which no doubt he will do.

I'm so pleased he won this award. A genuine sportsman with the modesty and humility of a true great, his remarkable achievements deserved the honour. His continual acknowledgement and praise for his selfless team-mates is never less than heartwarming and always a lesson to all. He also has a personality!

    Bravo Mr Cavendish!

I gather the votes were around 300,000 in total. More than would vote for me I suppose, but I really think the BBC should put this hoary old beast of an awards show to sleep. I imagine the odds of a man winning it next year are somewhere between slim and nil. Not that that is Mark's fault, but I'm not quite sure where this one will rank in his personal pantheon....

I agree with you about the show, it's overly sentimental mush and I can't watch it, but it's still the personal trophy they all want to win and I think he'll be proud of winning a trophy which so many illustrious sportsmen and women have their names on.

Well done to Mark for his five stage wins in this year's Giro De Italia and first Brit to win the red jersey for points classification, now one of only five people to be points winners in the Vuelta a Espania, Giro, and Tour de France, a truly remarkable sporting achievement.

    Cavendish is amazing.
Today he won intermediate sprints as well as the final sprint to the line, knowing he had 11 points to make up to clinch the red points jersey.
    His determination is total.
I hope he has another great Tour De France this year.

Amazing rider, the guts to fight in those sprints is a wonder to behold, sadly the tv doesn't do it justice, to get a real taste of the speed they go you have to see it live.
