One thing I often turn to which helps get me through life is the `There is only one thing worse than being talked about..` quote. Never a truer word was spoken.

Yes, I`ve known a lot of people with nothing else better to do!

You've mentioned the Finch, Morley and Wilde films but there is also a very good 1980s TV film with Michael Gambon called 'Oscar'. I didn't think that the Fry film whitewashed why Wilde was sent to prison in any way, and I'm surprised that after it Stephen Fry didn't go on to perform in other serious roles. He was surprisingly good and convincing.

The Finch film though is the best of all, IMO. It shows his range and that of Lionel Jeffries.

He did. He has done lots of other films since then as well as all of his TV work. Some of them (both film and TV) in a comic vein, but a lot of them were serious roles

The contemporary reviewers seemed to favour the Peter Finch film, although nearly all excluded from their approval James Mason, stating his portrayal of Sir Edward Carson was not nearly as effective as that of Ralph Richardson in the Robert Morley film.

I liked the Peter Finch film and thought he handled the role very well. He had a brilliant supporting cast in James Mason, Lionel Jeffries, and the beautiful Yvonne Mitchell.

Stephen Fry was quite convincing, and I did like his portrayal of Oscar Wilde - but still prefer Peter Finch.

Thankfully I missed the 1980 version. I cannot stand Michael Gambon - he has all the charisma of a wooden slug with dry rot..
