Jules and Jim (1962) - Movie connections
I saw a film some time ago where the characters found opportunities to quote the narrator's final words from Truffaut's classic film 'Jules et Jim'. The quote was "...but it was not allowed." This phrase was affectionately quoted by some of the characters on a number of occasions. For the life of me I can't recall what film it was, and it's really annoying me! I think it's a fairly recent film but I could be wrong.
Can anyone identify the film?

I've got a feeling it's quoted in one of The Beiderbecke Trilogy, but I can't remember which one. It's part of Jill Swinburne's ongoing campaign to educate Trevor to the finer things in life. It's certainly said affectionately because she was very affectionate to Trevor, despite his various limitations.

It's in "The Beiderbecke Affair" during the breakfast that Jill, Trevor and Helen of Tadcaster have in Jill's house after Helen's stayed the night. So episode four ("Um... I Know What You're Thinking"). That starts with Trevor introducing Jill to Helen at the "cancelled" political meeting, so it's probably somewhere between a quarter and a half of the way through the episode. At least I think that's right. As a result of their current predicament, they certainly discuss the menage a trois aspect of "Jules et Jim", I presume the line comes into the conversation at some point.
Edit: it may be referenced elsewhere as well, more in the way Steve mentions it. Or of course it could be that the "Jules et Jim" conversation there sets up the other bit later.

I've just re-watched it.
That's right, that's about 18 minutes into the episode. Then, just past the half-hour mark, Jill's out with Helen and talks about pulling the petals off a plastic flower when she was in a restaurant with her ex-husband, and being asked to leave because "it was not allowed". Shortly afterwards the vicar is told by Hobson that storing goods in church basement is "not allowed". Then, right at the end, it's used twice as the vicar tells Trevor and Big Al about his visit from Hobson and Trevor explains to them about the line in the film as they walk away into the end credits.
