    Hi there

The film From beyond the Grave is quite a good answer though it is not the one. I watched episode 9 and 10 and I saw the beautiful sun coming through but not quite the same set up. A medieval man was sitting in a medieval room hearing of people dying. In order to recognise the film the first part and last part must coincide. The first part starts with a mystery of people dying no bargain shop with mirror. The last part whilst everything was crushing down a young couple holding close saying "we love each other". However, it was a good answer quite close.

    Sincerely

    Dona

    Hi Rick

I have investigated Baffled but the set up is not very close. By the way should you have at anytime a complete list of the films showing at the Metropole from September to December 1973 I would like to see it perhaps I can recognise something. Remember the the Black and White Minstrel show was going on and I have a strong feeling that it was just after this sure, but I cannot say for certain. Many thanks for all you are doing.

    Sincerely

    Dona

The plot thickens, Dona ! (Well sort of)

Here's the rundown of the Metropole showing dates for 1973:

Until January 24, 1973: Dick Emery in 'Oooh You Are Awful'
January 25-February 21: 'Its a 2'6" Above the Ground World'
February 22-March 21: Anthony Hopkins spy thriller "When Eight Bells Toll"
    March 22-April 18:And Warhol's 'Heat'
April 19-May 16: The Kirk Douglas (Italian?) crime drama 'A Man to Respect' and 'The Law Enforcers' (see earlier posting)
May 17-July 11: Anthony Quinn Harlem crime drama 'Across 110th Street'
July 12-August 8:Undersea thriller 'The Neptune Factor'
August 9-November 8: "Live and Let Die"
November 9-December 6: Carry-On series continues with 'Carry On Girls'
December 6-January 1974: 'The Wicker Man', plus Donald Sutherland in 'Don't Look Now'

*My London information magazine for September 1973 lists Max Bygraves at the Victoria Palace Theatre whilst the Black and White Minstrel Show' was in a season at the New Victoria Theatre around the other side of Victoria Station from the Metropole.

The showing of the supernatural film 'Baffled' with Leonard Nimoy took place between April 18 to June 26, 1974, immediately prior to a later incarnation of Live and Let Die on June 27, 1974 for one month only. This was followed by "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad" on July 25,1974.
    Any help there maybe?

According to a listing I've seen in the Daily Express for the Metropole, from approx. 29/6/1973-11/7/1973 the musical film Tom Sawyer was shown, coupled with Gawain and the Green Knight, directed by Stephen Weeks.

Gawain fits with the medieval/fantasy theme, but wasn't a horror film.

    Hi there

Many thanks for your suggestions. The period in question is from September to December 1973 most likely around the 2nd fortnight in November but this cannot be certain.

    Hi Rick

Yes you are right the plot thickens. The matter centres around from 9 November to December 6. I will look into the Carry-On series for 1973 but I don't feel optimistic about it. Do you by any chance have the complete listing of the New Victoria Theatre for this period perhaps it was there. Many thanks.

    Sincerely
    Dona

I would only have the complete 1973 New Victoria schedule if films continually played there. The Black and White Minstrel show may have made quite a dent in the film schedule. I can try individual films but this is going to take quite some time this way. Euryale's suggestion splits up the Across 110th Street booking but as a United Artists release as well as is Tom Sawyer it looks feasible.

Stop Press! Before i go totally berserk on this one, my London tourist entertainment guides for 1973 list The Black and White Minstrel Show already resident at the New Victoria by 1st September 1973 and it closed its season on December 9,1973.

The Bruce Lee film The Big Boss dragged the trading period up until December 24 (Christmas Eve) 1973, then thats it!

    Hi Rick

I have looked into Carry-on Girls 1973 and it is not anywhere nearer, neither Across 110 Street and Gawain the Green Knight and certainly not Tom Sawyer. I could soon recognise the film by the watching the first part. I now hope that you might have a list for the New Victoria, somehow it rings the bell that it was before Magnum Force or soon after the Black and White Minstrel show. It was just a small film showing for a short time. Many thanks for what you are doing. Take your time.

    Hi Rick

Bruce Lee and martial arts unfortunately do not fit in. My opinion is that small films showing for a short period (few days) between big films do not get listed, not so far back anyway. The only way it could come to light is if someone was watching it during that time and can remember it. I would like to thank you anyway for all you have done.

    Sincerely
    Dona

Apart from the Metropole and the New Victoria there were two OTHER cinemas at that time within a few minutes walk of both of these addresses. One was the Cameo-later the Classic Victoria (almost next-door to the Metropole) and the Biograph which was the next street away from the New Victoria. Both closed down some ten years later than our date in question.

The Classic Victoria was almost always booked for Kung-Fu or 'naughty schoolgirl/housewife' pictures (need I say more?) and the Biograph was hardly ever listed as it was a short-period residence for re-run films which ran for only a few days at a time, even.

If anyone in or visiting London has a few days' spare they can visit the British Newspaper Archive at Colindale (is it still open?) where every London newspaper ever printed is stored on database there only.

Otherwise i think we are going to have to wait for a surprise member of Britmovie to come forward some time in the future!

    Hi Rick

I very much appreciate you help me somehow. The cinemas/theatres in question are only two and precisely the one when The Black and White Minstrel Show was going on and Live and Let Die followed by Magnum Force, within the same cinema. Any other cinemas do not apply. There is no mistake about this, I was working there and I watched the films over and over again for a long time. I certainly keep in mind the British Newspaper Archive at Colindale if is still open. In the meantime I have a deeper look at the Wicker Man, unfortunately You Tube has deleted the videos and I cannot watch the first part, but I will find a way. I will keep you informed of any developments if any. Once again many thanks.

    Sincerely
    Dona
