Help! please its been too long...

I am looking for the name of a TV programme or possibly a film shown on British TV, around 1968 - 1974. Where a dramatic scene with a dress and glass case features.

I have tried to find out what this scene was for about 40 years. A dress or wedding dress in a tall glass case in a rear corner of a Victorian old ladies bedroom or parlour, she is sitting on a chaise lounge sofa in the foreground, and warns a young girl who is admiring the dress or wedding dress, in the tall case (at the back of the room on the facing left) "not to open the case" .

But the girl does secretly, behind the old lady, and when the air rushes inside in a of basic technique of film animation /time frame - the dress dramatically and rapidly falls to pieces.

It is NOT Mrs Haversham in Great Expectations. Unless a rather strange imaginative version was ever done. Only four or five people I have ever spoken too actually recall it...someone said it was a film about a girl and a dress she really wants to wear - to be able to keep sane!. Another person suggested it being from a never repeated since - European childrens folk type film like the Snow Queen or Singing Ringing Tree series. Another from Alfred Hitchcocks TV series. I have looked on Youtube at some of these but still in vain!

    WHAT was it? please help.

Just to add the old lady collapses and has a heart attack , I think...any suggestion very welcome. It may after some communications on this be from a Schools Television Drama c. 1971-3 or a Childrens Film Foundation film... we got taken to them a few times on a Saturday morning

It plays ok, you just uploaded the same one twice, Could be it. Thank you, I have not seen this series - in recent years. Are the storylines likely? Is this one episode something I should see?

I'm sorry I can't remember much about the program. Would imdb help or maybe some reviews on amazon?

I just googled your description of the program and went to youtube and downloaded it. Twice! Oops.

That opening title sequence and theme music - which is not the one which usually crops up on compilation discs (it's the end title music that does) - bring back many memories. Thanks, cdouglas!

I looked at those early few years list only of Freewheelers, titles and very brief description on imdb. Of course the ones that were wiped are the most intruiging regards being likely candidates. I suppose if somehow I looked through old TV listing weekly mags TV Times or Radio Times, I would find more. Yes, 1968 - 71 seems most possible as the one.

It will be TV Times as FREEWHEELERS was a Southern TV production. I think I have (very brief) storylines for this series and will see if I can look them out.

That would be great. Thanks very much, I was born in 1963, so its likely to be 1968 - 1972...I know that is a lot of TV Times. It may have been part of a fantasy / historical drama series for children broadcast during that time. So anything with the type of title scenerio of ...'Great Aunt ? Secret' or 'Grandmothers Dress'..or 'The Glass Case' would very helpful.

So far, I'm afraid I can't find anything in my records that fits in with your recollections, but I will keep looking.

I think I may be able to help you, because it is something that has stuck in my mind, although my memory of it goes back to the 1950s. I believe it to be an episode of the old Douglas Fairbanks Presents series from the 1950s. I think it was called The Heirloom and starred Sybil Thorndike and Judy Campbell - they were sisters, and Judy Campbell played the somewhat mentally unstable sister. The Douglas Fairbanks shows were re-edited and shown on TV again in the late 1960s. I have checked, and Granada certainly showed them either shortly before or just after the children's television programmes in 1969; I think these episodes were called either 'Short Story' or 'Matinee'. I hope this helps.

If it is the Douglas Fairbanks series, this one looks likely:

Short Story: Douglas Fairbanks Presents: THE WEDDING DRESS
    05Mar69 Granada Wed 4:25-4:50pm
    Starring: Mary Morris, Andre Morell

    Here's the schedule on Granada:

Thank you, closing in now on my 43 year ? quest. It all seems right here. The Heirloom or looking at that 'well put together' website on Fairbanks Presents, there is another one I noticed listed called The Wedding Veil 1954 shown Granada TV 1969. Looks very likely too!..Barbara Mullen and a Nanette Newman very young rings a dusty bell. Now I need to find out if these 3 episodes still exist, or if someone remebers the synopsis in more detail. Anyone know Nanette Newman?
