The most bizarre double-bill I ever saw in a cinema was the German "sex education" film Helga (1967) combined with an American VD film - it was fictional and told the story of a police or public health official investigating an outbreak of syphillis on an island off the coast - he discovers that the cause of the epidemic is the rampant promiscuity and group sex activities of local teenagers - my abiding memory of the film is a slideshow of real images of the effects of VD, which were totally gross and shocking on the big screen in colour. I've never been able to find the name of the film on the internet and I wonder if anyone can shed any light on it - it really was a one-off! I saw the two films in a cinema in Dublin in 1974, so they may have been on release as a double-bill in the UK also at the time.

Helga - Vom Werden des menschlichen Lebens This educational movie was proposed and sponsored by the German government.

Soon after been appointed health secretary, Kte Strobel, aged 60, promoted sex education.

For that, she also used modern means, school books, and this movie project.
The resulting movie was a first, and is thus considered a milestone.
Of course it was highly controversial, but even more successful, in Germany and elsewhere.

In hindsight, it is also blamed for breaking a taboo and triggering a wave of lesser movies. Soft-porn for teenagers dressed as a sex education flic for the boomers public going through puberty.[/COLOR]
I saw it in secret. I must have been 14 then. Quite exciting. I remember naked girls in a school shower. My mother proposed I go see it the following week. I declined. No wonder it disappeared from collective memory. It wasn't a cinematic masterpiece.

"This film was part of the legendary German sex education series that started in 1967 with HELGA (available on VHS from Something Weird Video in a dubbed form, funnily enough it never came out on video in it's home country Germany, whereas the sequels HELGA AND MICHAEL and HELGA UND DIE MNNER did indeed got a release in the early days of home video). It features Ruth Gassmann as Helga who was very sexy in a natural kind of way. You'll get some nice animated scenes that show how the sexual act works, but of course Helga and Michael get down to it as well, both with each other and other partners, before getting together again. This series was partially funded by the government, so it was actually meant to educate about sexuality. The result is partially campy, but still pretty seriously handled stuff. Nice dated sex education film made in Germany."

"HELGA," the West German movie that opened yesterday in neighborhood theaters, is an illustrated sex education lecture that bears as much relation to a real movie as a hygiene manual does to Dostoyevsky.

Using animated drawings as well as models, microphotography of various internal processes and staged footage, it shows the means by which conception occurs, the development of the fetus and, finally, the birth of a baby. In fact, it is an earnest, well-meaning editorial for sex education in schools, if not in theaters. The movie was made with the cooperation of the Central Institute for Health Education in Cologne, and it is presented here by American International Pictures, whose earlier contributions to the sane sex life of the young have included "Beach Party" and "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein."

HELGA, written and directed by Erich F. Bender; produced by Roland Cammerer, a Rinco Productions-Cammerer Films presentation released by American International Pictures. At neighborhood theaters. Running time: 76 minutes.
    Helga . . . Ruth Gassman

I reckon it could well be Damaged Goods aka V.D. - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055580/

or possibly the reedited short which used some of it's footage, but added a narrator, Summer of '63 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0260402/

and as the Captain has pointed out they used to be at Something Weird Video which had a plethora of these Sex/Hygiene Scare films which played the Drive in and Grindhouse circuits in the US and drifted across to Europe in double features with European sexploitation films.

    Or so I've heard.

If you're near a BFI Mediatheque you can watch this, rather more genteel, British version. Love on Leave in which Cyril Chamberlain discovers the dangers of beastliness

Perhaps a double bill with this would be sobering for youngsters before they start indulging in drugs or sins of the flesh or both!

Many thanks for all your replies - no, it wasn't Damaged Goods aka VD - as I recall it it was a late 60s or early 70s feature length film, in a sort of mystery thriller mode - the mystery being why so many teenagers in the locality were contracting VDs.

As a matter of interest, has anyone bought any DVDs from that Something Weird site, and are they playable in Region 2 on a regular DVD player?

I bought stuff from them (no, not what you're thinking ) and the stuff arrives fine but as I have a multi-regional player (doesn't everyone? ) I don't know what region it is but I assume Region 1. Is there a way to tell? Or couldn't you just hack your machine? Or you could download VLC onto your computer

OK how about this one Stigma starring future Miami Vice star Philip Michael Thomas, there's not much about it at IMDB but other reviews have some of the details you speak of

That's it! Many thanks and well done on a great bit of detective work- how did you find it? The Wordpress blog is highly informative and even refers to the "educational 16-mm VD scare film" that is about the only scene I remembered in the film.

This section of the forum is fantastic - this is the second time that I've been able to put a name on a vaguely remembered film from the dim and distant past.

So much for my theory of "Attack of the Crab Monsters" but as that was from 1957 it was too early anyway !!!!
