This was sent to me, with a claim that the guy leaning over was/might be... Patrick McGoohan. I don't think it is but rather than just say, "it's not him" I wondered if anyone might recognise an actor, or the scene and I can be moor helpful when I reply. It has crossed my mind that this might not be a film still, but rather a publicity shot for an old theatre production, although the *set* looks like a film set-up.

    Anyhow, any recognised faces? .....

It is a film publicity still. That 692-21 code in the lower right hand corner is the type of code used for British films. The first part, the 692, will be used for all publicity photos from that film.

See this page for some notes about collecting film stills

Captain Waggett also thought Leslie Howard, eslewhere, so I'll go with Les and "Captured". I've told the guy it's only an educated guess though, so no harm can be done if someone comes along later with a 100% different id .......

Many thanks and I've let the guy know it's not me wot knew, but my cleverer associates.......

I thought Louis Hayward but not with any conviction... I can't see anyone who looks like either Leslie Howard or Douglas Fairbanks Jr but then I don't remember the film well enough to recall a scene like that. The POW camp in it was much more squalid than in the jolly 1950s Butlins-style ones though - IIRC it was all huge barracks with 200 chaps in them. Can any uniform-spotting types help?

Oops, sorry, one L.H. is the same as the next to my memory...

The guy has emailed back and said he's sure it's not Leslie Howard though, and seems to think the uniforms date this Still as being much later than the 1930's.

However he is happy enough that it is not Patrick McGoohan either....

The chap being fed has the RAF wings on his coat and the officer leaning over has a lapel badge belonging to The Royal Army Ordinance Corps so I assume they're all British Officers. At first I thought it might be somewhere like Colditz, it's not in a wooden barrack type Camp such as seen in other POW films.

Doesn't look like Louis Hayward to me. No further ideas though.

Wouldn't the first one obviate the second?

Or would a Euromovie released in Britain get the same coding on the pix for the British release? I wouldn't have expected there to be many European movies about Britishers in prison in a war, gettting released over here - so that list must be pretty small...

I'm assuming it's a prison-camp scenario too, because they seem to have to live on bread rolls and soup but it could just be NAAFI rations...

The chap leaning over on the right looks more like Darren McGavin than Patrick McGoohan.

On closer inspection it doesn't appear to be an RAOC collar badge but the epaulettes certainly make him a British Officer

Thanks for that Moor, looking at the pilot's greatcoat I would say he belongs to the Royal Flying Corps, the coat appears to be Khaki, RAF steel/blue came in when the RAF was formed in 1918 and after. Also the pattern appears to be different from that of a WW2 RAF coat, so it is a film which features WW1.

The picture below features two WW1 pilots. According to one source both WW1 and WW2 army uniforms were identical with the one difference being that the WW1 shirt collar was clipped together and the tie flared over as in the picture below.

Could it be this? The Louis Hayward look-alike might be Barry K Barnes...

Jack Hawkins certainly is not in that picture.

But it does look like a pre 1950s movie.
