Can anyone identify a horror film with the late, great Peter Cushing, where towards the end his character is intensely reading a large tome (with a glass of red wine) and he meets a horrible death? It could be a film about Black Magic or Devil Worshipping!

Perhaps The Devil's Men aka Land of the Minotaur (1976) made in Greece and co-starring Donald Pleasence?

Could it be 'The Uncanny' ? It is a long time since I've seen this but, as far as I recall, it is three connected shorts revolving around cats. Peter Cushing appears as an author who is trying to publish a book on how cats exact revenge from those who harm them.

      Spoiler:
Even if it is not The Devil's Men, which does involve black magic rituals and a large book, it certainly gives the scarlet-robed High Priest Peter Cushing a nice send off:

Not confusing it with the ending of The Offspring (From a Whisper to a Scream) in which Vincent Price is killed a bit like this?

In The Uncanny, Cushing delivers a manuscript to Ray Milland and at the end of the film leaves Milland's house and meets a sticky end. Milland tosses Cushing's tome in the fire.
