I always thought this was a Tales of the Unexpected episode but having gone through the plot summaries I can't find it. Definitely British and of the same period/vein as Tales.

A dying business owner is about to marry a young woman, the plan being that after he dies she will marry his son and the business etc will pass to the son via the woman without paying death duties.

The twist is that the woman is the secret daughter of his general manager who was fiddled out of his share of the business many years before by the dying man. She has no intention of marrying the son instead keeping the business for herself and her father.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like it could be an episode of Orson Welles' Great Mysteries.

The other anthology series that sprang to my mind was Hitchcock's TV series. It used to start with his silhouette and then he'd often do a preamble and a conclusion. It was a Sixties show but I'm sure some of them at least were made in colour, so would have been seen later as not so ancient.

The stories told on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" emphasized irony as their chief ingredient, and as a result, many of them ended with virtue unrewarded and villains unpunished.

That's the plot of "The Ghost in the Pale Blue Dress", a Jeremy Burnham play in the series "Scorpion Tales", shown on ITV in May 1978. Tony Britten was the father, Brian Stirner the son and Sandra Payne the young woman.

The whole series is available on Network DVD.

Thanks Simon that's the one. The number of times I must have seen Tony Britten in things since and not remembered that he played the father.

Thanks for the other replies. I had forgotten how many of these mystery series there were in the 70s and 80s.

I now have said DVD. The series has stood the test of time rather well. The only trouble is, most of the stories- especially one like that, with 'Ghost' in the title- have a tendency to let the viewer down by promising the mysterious and supernatural but actually delivering something far more prosaic.
