This is a low key British film that I saw on TV some years ago. I don't even know what format it's available in today. It's sort of a psychological thriller with a very gothic atmosphere.

Also a 6 part children's TV drama filmed under the title Marianne Dreams which is far better than the film

This one comes up every now and then. Agree with jonpsyche though, not least 'cause the film version altered the storyline chopping out essential elements and inclining it towards a teen romancer. It ought to have been much more claustropohobic and darkly-lit.

I first saw the film when I was quite young and didn't even know it was based on a novel. I'm curious to read the book now.

Isn't 'Escape into Night' a similar theme also?

I believe you are right and that the original book was Marianne Dreams, Escape Into The Night was the BBC TV series and Paperhouse the inferior, far less scary movie
