She was the very first person to sing 'Smoke gets in your eyes' and later starred in a film named after her.

The very first people to sing it were probably Jerome Kern and/or Otto Harbach. I doubt if they wrote it without singing it a few times

The first person to sing it in public was Tamara Drasin in the stage musical "Roberta" in 1933

Tamara was in the film No, No, Nanette (1940) but it wasn't about her or named after her.

The first person to record the song was Gertrude Niesen, but she didn't star in a film named after her either

Sometimes questionmasters can get things wrong

Looking this up I see Ruth Etting did an early recording and Doris Day later played her in Love Me Or Leave Me. That is the closest I can get to answering the question.

Ouch - I though that was quite funny, but nearly two months of tumbleweed is a bit cruel.

Or alternatively, .... please don't (and especially if it's going to take 3 years for an answer)!

Wrong I'm afraid, I doubt if she could have played herself posthumously. She was played by various actresses in the films named after her.
