Can anyone put a title to this film of William Hartnell? Made in the 50s about a man falsely accused and imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. On a dockside he is put into the back of a Police car and turns round to note the name of a ship which has something to do with his arrest. He sees the name on the stern as the "Chester" and the Police car moves off. The viewer then sees the name has been partially blocked by a crane or lorry and it reads "Chichester". So upon his release from prison he's looking for the wrong ship. Saw this film many years ago on TV. Any ideas?

I think the film with the "Chester" ship was actually "The Long Memory", with John Mills

I have been to imdb database and read all the spoilers for the William Hartnell films made in the 50's and can find no reference to a film with this storyline are you sure you got either the right actor or the right decade as he did start making films from the 30's

I STILL say the film with the "Chester" ship in it was "The Long Memory", with John Mills. But no-one seems to have checked that one out.

My question was correctly answered as being "Murder in Reverse". I have a copy of John Mills "Long Memory" and I'm afraid it wasn't that film, but thanks for your interest.

Hi, I watched this film 2 weeks ago at the BFI. I don't think it'd been shown on TV since 1970 or 71 when I last watched it one Saturday night on ATV as a schoolboy. You are indeed right about the partially obscured Chichester ship, which he'd mistakenly named as the Chester - this was my abiding memory too from the intervening years. I wasn't as great a film as I had recalled, but I was only a child when I last saw it, and more easily excited. I was thinking he had planned to commit the murder in 'reverse' much earlier on in the proceedings, knowing he had already been punished for such a crime; however, that was never his intention until the moment the film ENDED... on those 3 words! I found a few plot holes, ie it was unrealistic to expect a 12/13 year old child (Petula Clark's character) to have had no recollection of her first 12/13 years before being fostered by a new family, and to believe her foster parents were her natural ones. Also if it was such a big news story, how come nobody reported Smith for still being alive? And why didn't he just change his name to make it harder for Masterick to find him? .... but it was great to watch it again after all of these years.
